In music, we started to look at graphic notation which helped us recognise the syllables in words and how this corresponds to standard notation. We then practiced as a group different graphic notations and then we had a conductor help us start and stop. We watched a video from August Rush to help us understand the role of a conductor.
In Crew Hamill, we have shifted our focus from fiction to non-fiction and have started a new book called Vulture Culture. To begin the week, we made a list of things we noticed about the pictures that were within the book – the title page and front cover. We then used this information to make a prediction about what may be included within the book. We decided that because it was non-fiction, it would be full of facts and real life information about vultures. Once we had done this, we looked a little deeper and read the book introduction. This told us a little more about what to expect in the book and we chotted some ideas of what other information we would like to find out about vultures as we read the book. Following this, we looked at the main vocabulary within the book and identified the meaning of some of the tricker vocabulary we would come across. By doing all this, we were able to read the book fluently as we had already looked at the tricky vocabulary and knew how to say the words correctly. Finally, we have worked in pairs to complete Fastest Finger and Have a Think questions about the book.
Happy Easter Y6! Have a well earned rest with your families, you deserve it! Children will be bringing home some revision for the easter holidays. This is given to ensure they are just doing bits over the holidays to revise and should not be seen as homework to complete.
Crew Hamill had SO much fun taking part in the school easter egg hunt today! The first clue was delivered to our classroom which led us to five other clues hidden around school. We were able successfully follow the clues all the way to the office where our final clue contained a riddle! We solved this riddle successfully and have earned ourselves a eggcellent prize – a cadbury cream egg each!! Can you solve the riddle? “I’m tall when I’m young and I’m short when I’m old. What am I?”
Now that we are at the end of another half term, it was time to reveal the winners of our reading challenge. Crew Hamill have worked really hard to move their polar bears across the ocean in order to get them to the safety of the ice berg. This half term, we had two winners:
The person who read the most times at home – Luke Byram.
The person who has shown the greatest improvement in their attitude to learning – Kyla Smith.
Both of our winners received a Herbie Hedgehog reward! Happy Easter 🙂
At the beginning of the week, we finished our maths lesson a bit early so we took the opportunity to practice our Arithmetic (fractions of an amount). It was great seeing everyone use the method and almost everyone for all of them correct.
In expedition, we used our music knowledge and discussed the pentatonic scale. The pentatonic scale is a scale with 5 notes that are, C, D, E, G, A. We then used an interactive xylophone to practice using the pentatonic scale to play some different phrases.
Last week was Sign Language week in the UK – so all the students at Green Top have made this video, singing and signing the song ‘True Colours’ as part of the celebration!
‘If We Plant Trees…’ – Legacy @ NJS
As part of their awesome POLs this week, every single Year 3 and 4 child has planted a tree at Norton Junior School, with support from Murphy’s and their Roots Programme.
They also celebrated their product from last term (more on this next time!) and unveiled their awesome digital artwork, made from images of recycling – this will be on display in school after the Easter break!
Plover’s Eco Garden!
KS1 at Plover have just finished their Expedition ‘The Blue Planet’. Their final product has provided a lasting legacy for the community – a lovely eco garden that will develop across future Expeditions to provide a range of habitats and food sources for a variety of insects, birds and mammals.
Students dedicated the trees to community heroes who have helped to improve the lives of people across Intake and Doncaster at their POL yesterday – including Mrs Ogle and Dame Rosie Winterton!
Highlights from KS1 and LKS2’s COL @ Green Top
On Friday, KS1 and LKS2 at Green Top celebrated their learning for their two Expeditions – ‘The Blue Planet’ and ‘There Is No Planet B’
The celebration included an interactive art gallery, a visit from Reptile Rendezvous and showcasing awesome family learning.
In our expedition lesson, we were musicians and practiced sing the song “What a wonderful world”. We had to make sure we were singing in tune but we did find that keeping to the tempo and beat of the music tricky in some parts.
This week we unpicked what habits we have. We decided whether these were good habits or bad habits and then looked at how we could improve these habits! We have some great habits such as reading to calm down, going swimming each week and listening to music but we definitely need to improve some bad habits like picking our finger nails.
