Year 6 Celebrate with a Bowling Trip

On Wednesday afternoon, pupils from Crew Gray, Crew Godley, Crew McLoughlin and Crew White enjoyed a well-deserved trip to Adwick Leisure Centre to celebrate their hard work and resilience throughout SATs week and their final year at Carcroft School.

The adventure began with a journey on the public bus, where pupils represented the school brilliantly. Staff were incredibly proud of the maturity, respect and responsibility shown throughout the trip. Their excellent manners were noticed by members of the public and reflected the character they have developed during their time at Carcroft.

For some pupils, the afternoon was particularly memorable as it was their first ever visit to a bowling alley. It was wonderful to see their excitement as they tried something new alongside their friends.

Once the games began, there were plenty of strikes, spares and celebrations. Pupils encouraged one another throughout and showed fantastic sportsmanship, making the afternoon enjoyable for everyone.

The trip was an opportunity to celebrate more than academic success. Throughout the year, Year 6 have demonstrated perseverance, kindness and a commitment to working hard. The bowling trip provided a chance to recognise these achievements and create lasting memories together.

We would like to thank the staff at Adwick Leisure Centre for their warm welcome and congratulate all of our Year 6 pupils for being excellent ambassadors for Carcroft School. Well done, Year 6 – a well-earned reward for all of your hard work!

Learning Lifesaving Skills Together: Family First Aid Session🫀

Last week, our children took part in an engaging and informative family learning session focused on first aid basics. The session provided a valuable opportunity for children and their families to learn essential skills that could one day help save a life.

One of the key areas of learning was Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Children were introduced to the correct steps involved in performing CPR and practised the technique using demonstrations and role-play activities. They learned the importance of acting quickly in an emergency and how effective CPR can help someone whose heart has stopped beating.

The children were also introduced to the DR ABC approach, a simple but vital method used when responding to an emergency situation:

  • D – Danger: Check that the area is safe.
  • R – Response: Check if the casualty is responsive.
  • A – Airway: Ensure the airway is open and clear.
  • B – Breathing: Check whether the casualty is breathing normally.
  • C – Circulation/CPR: Begin CPR and call for emergency help if required.

Through discussions and practical activities, the children developed a greater understanding of how to assess a situation calmly and safely before offering help.

We are incredibly proud of the children for their participation and commitment. The knowledge and confidence they gained from this session will be invaluable and we hope they continue to share what they have learned with their families and wider community.

Exploring 3D shapes

In Maths, we explored 3D shapes and learned about their properties. We looked at faces, vertices and edges and practised counting them on different shapes.

By the end of the lesson, we were more confident identifying and describing 3D shapes using mathematical vocabulary.

Cricket Tournament Success!

Huge congratulations to our year 5 and 6 children who brilliantly represented the school at the recent cricket tournament. They all showed fantastic teamwork and sportsmanship!

A special shout-out goes to our year 5/6 girls’ team for an incredible performance bringing home 2nd place ! We are incredibly proud of you all. Well done!

UKS2 Festival of Sport

Today, our UKS2 Festival of Sport was a fantastic celebration of teamwork, determination and sportsmanship. The four house teams competed in a range of exciting races including the sprint race, obstacle race, egg and spoon race, skipping race and relay race. Every child gave their best effort, cheering each other on and showing great resilience throughout the day. The atmosphere was full of energy and encouragement, making the festival a brilliant event for everyone involved.

One of the highlights of the day was the parent vs teacher race, which brought lots of laughter and excitement from the crowd. Both teams competed enthusiastically while pupils eagerly supported from the sidelines. We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part and are excited to find out which house will be crowned the overall winner on Friday!

🫀Investigating our heart rate🫀

Crew Gray have been investigating to determine if exercise directly impacts our heart rate. We conducted a controlled experiment measuring our heart rate at resting, low intensity exercise and high intensity. We did this by recording our pulse before and after each activity, before recording our findings, which we are now going to use to write our investigation report.

Learning all about blood

In Crew Gray, we have been discovering all about blood and what it is made of! During an exciting hands-on lesson, we explored the four main components of blood and uncovered the important job each one has to keep our bodies healthy.

We used water mixed with yellow food colouring to represent the plasma, which gave the liquid a realistic look. Marshmallows were used to show the white blood cells, which help the body fight infections. Cheerios represented the red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body and give blood its red colour. Small pieces were also added to represent platelets, which help blood clot when we get a cut. As we carefully added each part to create our own “blood model”, we were amazed to see how these components work together to help our bodies function every day.

From Pharaohs to Food Stalls: A Time Odyssey Adventure for UKS2 Fieldwork

Our UKS2 pupils recently stepped back in time for an unforgettable Time Odyssey workshop, where they explored the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians – before fast-forwarding to a lively trip to Doncaster Market!

We participated in an exciting, hands-on workshop that transported the children thousands of years into the past. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed great teamwork as they tackled challenges and shared their ideas.

We then swapped this for shopping stalls with a visit to Doncaster Market. This provided a wonderful opportunity to connect our learning to the present day. Pupils explored the vibrant market, observed how goods are bought and sold and even practised their communication and money-handling skills in a real-world setting.

Overall, it was a truly enriching experience that combined History, Design and Technology and real-life learning. We are incredibly proud of how engaged, respectful and enthusiastic the children were throughout the day.

Web Crawlers

Crew Gray have been learning all about web crawlers today and how search engines create index pages of all of the websites using web crawlers and hyperlinks. We explored how web crawlers work using non-fiction books to find information from the index and contents pages, and realised that this can take a long time for a human to complete, especially if you have to look through more than one book to find the correct information. We then looked further into how Google uses web crawlers and found that these are not actual people, so can get the job done much faster! After that, we became web crawlers around the classroom and rated our classroom objects using a table. We included the quantity of the object, the quality and the distance from where we were. These numbers then totalled up and we were able to rank the resources from highest to lowest. From this, we were able to see how search engines rank different websites using the quantity of times a key word is used and the quality of the information on the page, and how this affects the order that websites appear within search engines.
