Cheese Quesadillas

The children thoroughly enjoyed making cheese quesadillas during Life Skills today and were so enthusiastic about the activity that many asked for more. They practised their food preparation skills by cutting a tortilla wrap in half, adding grated cheese, and folding it over before it was carefully fried for a few minutes on each side. The children were engaged throughout the process and enjoyed tasting their finished quesadillas.

Caterpillars

After half term, we had a very special delivery in the Hub – caterpillars came to stay with us! The children were excited to observe them and we spent time talking about how small they were when they first arrived. We discussed what might happen next and wondered how big they would grow.

To support our learning, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and explored the life cycle of a butterfly, learning about each stage from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly.

It has now been two weeks since the caterpillars arrived, and we have been fascinated by the changes taking place. They have recently started to form their chrysalises, which has been very exciting to observe. Keep a look out for our butterfly blog! 🦋

Learning Lifesaving Skills Together: Family First Aid Session🫀

Last week, our children took part in an engaging and informative family learning session focused on first aid basics. The session provided a valuable opportunity for children and their families to learn essential skills that could one day help save a life.

One of the key areas of learning was Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Children were introduced to the correct steps involved in performing CPR and practised the technique using demonstrations and role-play activities. They learned the importance of acting quickly in an emergency and how effective CPR can help someone whose heart has stopped beating.

The children were also introduced to the DR ABC approach, a simple but vital method used when responding to an emergency situation:

  • D – Danger: Check that the area is safe.
  • R – Response: Check if the casualty is responsive.
  • A – Airway: Ensure the airway is open and clear.
  • B – Breathing: Check whether the casualty is breathing normally.
  • C – Circulation/CPR: Begin CPR and call for emergency help if required.

Through discussions and practical activities, the children developed a greater understanding of how to assess a situation calmly and safely before offering help.

We are incredibly proud of the children for their participation and commitment. The knowledge and confidence they gained from this session will be invaluable and we hope they continue to share what they have learned with their families and wider community.

Butter toffee bark

In Life Skills today, the children made butter toffee bark. They practised their measuring skills by carefully measuring the milk, butter, and sugar. The ingredients were added to a pan and melted together. Once the mixture was ready, it was poured into a tray and decorated with sprinkles before being placed in the fridge to set. The children enjoyed taking part in each step of the activity.

Cheese Garlic Naan Bread

In Life Skills today, the children made their own cheese and garlic naan bread. They mixed 190g of self-raising flour with 250g of fat-free Greek yoghurt to create the dough. They then rolled out the dough, placed cheese in the centre, folded the dough around the filling, and rolled it out again. Finally, they fried the naan on each side for one minute before brushing the top with garlic butter. The children enjoyed developing their measuring, mixing, and food preparation skills while creating a delicious snack.

Colourful Semantics

Today we used colourful semantics to talk about our activity. Colourful semantics is used for sentence building to help children understand how to make a sentence and the order we put our words and phrases in. The children first start with a “who, doing, what?” structure, which is then built upon depending on their understanding.

Today’s activity involved more planting, and today we planted thyme, basil, and oregano.

Milkshake, Yummy!

Last week, we planted some strawberry seeds, we learned how the seeds will eventually grow into strawberries. Today, we used some store-bought strawberries to make a delicious strawberry milkshake by chopping them into small pieces and adding them to the blender with milk. We spoke about how we can hopefully use our plants in the future too!

Think we did a great job!

Plant Progress.

After a week the beans started to sprout! Look how excited we are 🙂

This was them after 2 weeks! Look how tall they are! Notice the difference with 4 days? WOW! We measure each day and write it on our chart. We’re excited to see how much they grow over the weekend.

The seeds we harvested from our tomatoes have even started to grow! Amazing!

Flower Power.

Over the past week, the children have sequenced the stages of plant growth and made and labelled their own flowers, all doing a fantastic job! Not only did they love creating the flowers, but they were also enthusiastic when talking through how plants grow. They are showing great interest and knowledge within the Growth and Change topic.
