Caterpillars

After half term, we had a very special delivery in the Hub – caterpillars came to stay with us! The children were excited to observe them and we spent time talking about how small they were when they first arrived. We discussed what might happen next and wondered how big they would grow.

To support our learning, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and explored the life cycle of a butterfly, learning about each stage from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly.

It has now been two weeks since the caterpillars arrived, and we have been fascinated by the changes taking place. They have recently started to form their chrysalises, which has been very exciting to observe. Keep a look out for our butterfly blog! 🦋

Endangered Animals!

We have been researching endangered animals using one of our Expedition Anchor Texts, Red Alert! We have been gathering information to help us write an information text about what leads to extinction and how this can be prevented. We decided to focus on sea turtles but before that we loved learning about frogs, bears and many more endangered species!

Measuring in maths.

Last half term, we started measuring our growing plants to see how big they would get. We were amazed to discover that in just three weeks they had grown an incredible 60cm tall!

This week’s maths focus is all about measuring and comparing size. Today we explored our classroom, measuring different objects and seeing what we could build. As our structures got taller, we practised measuring them and comparing their heights.

We also developed our counting skills by adding one more resource each time and then remeasuring to see how the height changed. This helped us to understand measurement, counting, and the concept of “one more” in a fun and practical way.

Practicing our fast running!

With the field marked out into lanes, we decided to practise how fast we could run while also learning the importance of staying in our own lane. The children showed good listening skills, waiting to start until they heard “GO!”. There was some fantastic running and listening throughout the activity. We’ve enjoyed the nice weather over the past few days, burning off some energy.

Have a lovely half term 🙂

Colourful Semantics

Today we used colourful semantics to talk about our activity. Colourful semantics is used for sentence building to help children understand how to make a sentence and the order we put our words and phrases in. The children first start with a “who, doing, what?” structure, which is then built upon depending on their understanding.

Today’s activity involved more planting, and today we planted thyme, basil, and oregano.

5 x Readers In KS1!

Here are our magazines all lined up ready to go for Friday’s assembly! If your child has read 5 times at home this week – and it is recorded in their reading record – they will get a raffle ticket for our VERY EXCITING raffle in Friday’s community meeting!

2 winners will be chosen each week at random and they will be invited to select a comic book from this gorgeous range!

This week there will be 4 winners due to last weeks assembly being cancelled.

We cannot wait to see who our first winners are!

You’ve got to be in it to win it: 5 reads, over 5 days, recorded in planners.
