BBK – Animals in danger

This morning we’re researching animals that are in danger to build our background knowledge. We are focusing on fluency skills to really ensure we understand what we are reading. I praise how some children are rereading our text to double check we are understanding what we are reading.

Now we understand a little more about animals in danger, we are creating our own BBK poster.

Evolution – how have birds changed over time?

During Science, the crew had an opportunity to explore the evolution of birds beak to further understand why plants and animals have to evolve so they can survive. The children wrote a hypothesis about which beak they thought would be better before experimenting with different beak types. They really enjoyed this and most children were able to articulate why birds beaks have had to evolve over time.

Writing – knowledge building

This week, the children have watched some videos regarding deforestation, importance of trees and the impact on animals and plants. To say I was blown away by the crew work that happened during this session would be an understatement. All the crew gathered facts during the video and then consulted with each other to ensure they weren’t being repetitive with their facts. To see the children work so effortlessly as a crew was a pleasure.

Fractions! (3.3.22) #️⃣🔢

Year 3 had an active discussion as part of their maths lesson today. We discussed what we noticed about different fractions and looked to see if we could order them into unit and non-unit fractions. It was interesting to see what they thought they were, ready to then complete a range of questions successfully during the lesson.

On an afternoon, we are Mathematicians

I spent Monday afternoon with Mr Longley (our Maths Lead) talking through the Mathematics curriculum at Carcroft School as it’s a little bit different to the Maths Curriculum we had in place last year. Mr Longley showed me ‘Magic Maths’ in practise and I spotted our Y3 Crew Flaherty and Crew Gerrard practising their written methods for addition.

We then went and had a little look at Magic in Y5, where we spotted Crew MI practising converting mixed fractions. They were able to use Mrs McClare’s anchor chart to support them with the new method they had been taught.

Next we had a little look in Crew McLoughlin, who were working hard to get smart using metric measures. Mrs McLoughlin was re-modelling some of the learning with a small group of pupils and I noticed other children working on either fluency or reasoning and problem solving questions.

It was great to see nearly every pupil working hard to get smart on a Monday afternoon. Keep up the great work Carcroft Mathematicians.

KS1 Delve into the depths of the Marina Trench

Crew Godley and Crew Longley developed their artistic skills today to highlight the importance of recycling our plastic to ensure it does not end up in the Oceans. We were fascinated to observe the Marina Trench and the impact of pollution on the deepest, darkest depths of the ocean. We used multi media to create art work to show the impact of pollution on the marine life.

Ordering numbers

We’ve been working with bigger numbers in Crew Welburn this week – numbers to 50! We worked hard as our table crews to make the numbers we were given and to put them in order from smallest to greatest.

PE UPDATE

Sorry, I have just realised that I said that PE was on a Tuesday.

PE is on a Wednesday, not a Tuesday.

Apologies for any inconvenience 🙂
