How can you be a maker like me?

As part of Case Study 3, Crew Nursery are answering the question, ‘How can you be a maker like me?’

This week, the children are going to be bakers who make delicious sweet treats! Yesterday, after reading ‘The Gingerbread Man’, the children explored various collage materials and used them to design their own Gingerbread Men. In provision, they also used role play and small world resources to reenact the story and take on the role of bakers in the play dough, sand and role play areas. We can’t wait to see and smell their very own delicious Gingerbread Men later in the week…

World Book Day

Don’t forget we will be celebrating World Book Day on Friday 4th March.

Children can dress up as their favourite book character.

Weekly update from Crew FE.

The children have returned to school after the half term break in great spirits this week. They have been finishing off their learning on Hansel and Gretel and how as a community we can support each other.

They were very excited to play and support each other in our own class shop. We found during crew a few of the children’s parents work at our local supermarket. So as a crew we decided to role play these community heroes in our very own shop. They worked hard to share resources, and work our how many pennies they would need to purchase their shopping trolley full of items.

Next they looked at other community heroes and discussed the local bin men and council workers. We found these people really support our community to look nice and ensure the streets are kept clean. We deepened our own understanding of rubbish and recycling. We found as a crew we could recycle lots of our daily rubbish. We sorted the rubbish into the different bins.

The children used the play dough to create 3D figures of these community heroes. They looked closely at the different uniforms and how we could spot different jobs by just looking at what a person wore.

We will be starting case study 3 next week and we can not wait!

Well done crew FE, another fantastic week of leaning. X

Working hard on a Terrific Tuesday

Today was my second day back after my maternity leave and I was blown away by some of the beautiful work going on across school.

I also spent yesterday in every crew and spotted every pupil engaged and on- task- it made me so proud! But I forgot my IPad. However, today I made up for it and ensured that I captured some of the fabulous-ness going on across our school.

Today I spotted:

Crew Longley developing their teamwork skills and communication skills in particular during their morning Crew session. They had to move pieces of spaghetti from the table to the floor! They were concentrating so hard!

Then I ventured into Crew Fox whereby they were working hard to ensure that their independent writing was of a Year 6 standard by critiquing a piece of work and checking it against the gold standard on their rubric. The children were certainly working hard to get smart in there today.

Next I had a swift visit to Crew MI whereby pupils were listening to Mrs McClare modelling reading aloud. Children then used her great model to then read fluently in their pairs. There was some fabulous peer work going on in Crew MI today. Great reading guys!

After being in UKS2, I then visited our youngest pupils in school. I visited Foundation Stage. F1 pupils were working hard to use their construction skills to create a fabulous structure, which they shared was a slide. What I loved about this crew, was the way in which they worked together as a mini crew to take turns with support from Miss Chapman.

I had a little nosey in Crew Godley who were busy on their IPads reading their books on Accelerated Reader and also a flying visit to Crew Flaherty, who were working collaboratively to read their text and answer questions. Some great reading opportunities for our children which was great to see.

I had a quick catch up with Jess and Miss Smith as I whizzed through the hall. Jess was busy burning off some energy, practising her gymnastic skills before heading back to her crew. It was lovely to see you both.

Finally I concluded my morning with a visit to F2, whereby I spotted children cooking up a real treat in the cafe but also children working hard to improve their letter formation with Miss Evans. Some children were also practising their fine motor skills drawing people in the writing area.

I loved spending time in and out of classes and I can’t wait to visit more classes over the next two weeks! Keep up the great work Crew Carcroft!

Shop Keepers of Carcroft!

The children within Crew FE have had a brilliant time in their own class shop. They have worked hard to use their fred fingers to sound out words to write a shopping list. They had to think about all the different things you could buy in a shop. They then used this list to shop for the items using the shopping trolleys.

The children had to walk around the shop collecting the items on their lists before paying the shop keeper using pennies. We were kind to each other and supported one another by sharing the items out and ensuring everyone was able to have some shopping.

We have had a great time!

Due to Covid 19 the concert was postponed but we now have our new concert date which is 21st April 2022.

There are no more places available, this is just for the children who were due to attend in February. All those children have been sent a letter with all the relevant information on.

Expedition excitement in Crew FE

This week we have been continuing our research into our second case study: what builds a community?

At the start of the week we donned our high visibility jackets and ventured out for a walk around Carcroft to explore our community in more detail. Together we made many observations such as buses and bus stops, road and street signs, shops, lamp posts and parks. The children also wowed us with their previous learning of different styles of houses, pointing out flats, bungalows and terraces.

Upon returning to school we thought carefully about the purpose of each aspect and how they help to support our community. The children also shared their knowledge with each other by helping to answer each other’s interesting questions. Victor wondered what the poles with wires were, to which George explained that they give our houses electricity. We also reflected on our walk to help us produce some gorgeous writing!

We have also spent time exploring a range of maps and globes. The children really enjoyed looking at them and noticed interesting details such as the country borders and names of places. When looking at a map of the United Kingdom, Nolan asked how long it would take to drive from the top of Scotland to Penzance on the tip of England. The children placed guesses ranging from 8 hours to 50. Thanks to trusty Google maps we found out it would take around 13 hours!

Later in the week we looked at places a bit further from home! We used the globes and maps of the world to look at other countries such as those that other children in our Crews are from.

What a fun week we have had in Crew FE!

Celebrating World Book Day

Its 25 years since world book day started so we will be celebrating on Friday 4th March. Children can dress up as their favourite book character.

Acting Headteacher Announcement

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been an absolute privilege to take on the role of Acting Headteacher at Carcroft School. I am writing today to inform you that Miss Laing will be returning to school as Headteacher on Monday 21st February and I will return to my previous role of Assistant Headteacher – Inclusion Leader.

I would like to thank the staff, children and parents for how supportive they have been during this time. This support has meant that leaders, supported by the XP Trust, have been able to continue to drive school improvement forward.

Each and every member of the Carcroft Crew strives to deliver the best education possible as this is what our children truly deserve. I am proud of the progress school has achieved during my time as Acting Headteacher and am looking to forward to working with Miss Laing, and other leaders, to build on this further when she returns.

Have a great half term everyone and see you all when we return on the 21st.

Kind regards,

James Tucker

Kind Crew

The children in nursery have been making pledges to look after the resources in their classroom and keep their learning spaces tidy this week. Archie, Lincoln and Ralphie have been showing stewardship by organising and tidying the construction area, even when they haven’t been working in there. We are proud of them and they are proud of their ‘I’m Being Kind’ stickers.
