Such resilience today in our maths lesson where we tackled some challenging word problems. Such collaborative working, supporting each other to get smart. A great start to the week MI 🙂

To kick start off our new expedition learning-Earth Shattering Events- Crew Pashley, Crew Thompson and Crew FE participated in various activities throughout hook week. We sketched snapshots of life in Pompeii, to create whole crew storyboards demonstrating what it was like when Mount Vesuvius erupted.
All the crews participated in a carousel of activities and experiments to begin our learning on natural disasters. We made coke and mentos volcanoes, experienced what a cold flood would feel like, and experienced what an earthquake would feel like.
In our learning labs this week we have have some phonic challenges to apply our knowledge of letters and sounds. Oliver was so proud of himself when he wrote ’panic’ independently. Its been great fun 🔤

This week we’ve been exploring The Tunnel, we LOVE this text and its has provided some great opportunities to develop of speaking and listening skills. We created our own tunnels and acted out the story using small world resources. It also led us into experiences to develop our vocabulary when when Dominic created a tunnel and explained it was ‘camouflaged’ so it was harder to find. He loved sharing his knowledge and understanding with the younger children in our crew.

First week back the children have been doing cardboard flower pots where they had to pick flowers and then use their fine motor skills to thread them through the holes. The children really enjoyed this and said it was very relaxing while sat on the school field in the sun.
In XP Outdoors today we had to find something straight, green, beautiful etc. We then shared everything we found with each other and noticed how all chose different items.

We ended our hook week with a stem project that required us to use our problem solving skills. Children were given a range of resources and they had to use these to create a pulley system. We linked this to how in the olden days. miners and other industries would have relied on systems like this to help them move large loads of coal.
This activity really challenged our resilience as there were a few different steps that needed to be completed to allow them to successful. We managed some of the steps but then required some clues to support with the rest.

Crew Shields have smashed their 1st swimming lesson ! Great job everyone! 😁

Yesterday, we visited the library for some reading for pleasure time. The children chose their favourite books and enjoyed reading them. We then came back to class and the full class was engaged with our class reader Lottie reading the book Eragon.

Hook week continued yesterday by allowing the children time to consolidate previous learning by giving them time to research and create a fact-file about mining. Children focused this more towards their local community so they could remind themselves of the importance mining played to the exisitance of Carcroft.
