Map work – Hook Week

Hook week is always an important time before we start an expedition to give children a taste of what we’ll be learning but also an opportunity to revisit previous skills.

Children used an atlas and google maps to locate some of the coal fields in the United a kingdom which led to discussions around why they thought lots of the coal mines were close together.

Hook week in Crew Welburn!

This week, we are hooking in to our new expedition – Would you travel by wheels, wings or other things? We’ve started our expedition by looking at vehicles within our local area that passed our school and thought about where they might be travelling to. We decided that the cars could be doing short journeys, like to the shops or to work, or they could be going further away to the sea side! We thought that the bicycle we saw was going to work or going home, because it would hurt your legs to cycle all the way to the sea side from Carcroft! When we looked up in the sky, we saw an aeroplane and we decided that this was taking people on holiday to a different country!

Provision fun!

We’ve had lots of fun in provision over the last couple of days and we have loved having our children back in the classroom! We can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings!

LKS2 Earth Day 2023 Celebrations!

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Saturday 22nd April 2023 it is Earth Day! Due to us not being in school on that day we will be celebrating the event on Friday 21st April 2023

Earth Day is an annual event that is focused on supporting environmental protection. The theme for this year is ‘Invest In Our Planet’. As part of our Year 3/4 Expedition for the Summer Term, ‘Earth Shattering Events’, ‘What happens when nature strikes?’, we will be thinking about how amazing and beautiful our planet is!

During our Expedition lessons on this day each crew in Year 3/4 will participate in a range of engaging activities, including Earth Day crafts such as making a paper plate earth, creating a collage of the structure of the Earth, making an Earth Day crown and much more! We hope that these will support and engage children in our learning around the planet Earth, as well as allow children to recap their previous knowledge from this current half term where they have been looking at sustainability.

Each Crew Leader will create a blog at the end of the day so that you can all see the exciting things that your child/ren have been getting up to throughout the day!

We are also inviting you (parents/grandparents/carers/guardians) into classrooms on this day, Friday 21st April 2023 to come and participate in some of these exciting activities with your child/ren! This will take place from 1:30pm until the end of the school day.

Also as part of this exciting day we are asking for the children (and staff!) in Year 3/4 to come to school dressed in Earth Day colours, examples such as, brown for soil, yellow for the sun, red for the sunset/core of the Earth, green for grass. The Earth is full of many colours so any colour/s will do!

Either at the end of this day or in preparation for the day it would be lovely for you to discuss with your child/ren different ways that we can look after our planet such as, picking up litter, planting trees and flowers, recycling etc.

We look forward to seeing your child/ren dressed in a variety of colours for this special celebration!

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

Finding out about our new book…The Tunnel

First we worked together to put the puzzle together to reveal the front cover of our new book.

We then wrote predictions about what we thought the book was about and what would happen.

A great first day back in MI

We started our day with a morning task around formal and informal language and the children worked hard to unpick the questions, discussing their answers with a partner then voicing their thoughts. We built on this in our main grammar session where we thought more about Standard and Non Standard English.

In our arithmetic session we looked at misconceptions from our previous arithmetic paper then applied our knowledge to a variety of questions.

In our maths lesson we looked at coordinates across 4 quadrants. We took part in a range of activities plotting coordinates, finding coordinates and making shapes. We then applied our knowledge to some reasoning and problem solving questions which really challenged our thinking.
