Yr 4 – Editing/redraft

Today, we started to edit and redraft our recount from the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. This has been a skill we’ve been working on since September and we’re continuing to develop.

We looked at an example of someone’s work and went through the process of taking one sentence at a time so we’re editing/redrafting small chunks. This ensures that we are working with manageable chunks. After modelling, children had the opportunity to start editing/redrafting their own work. They worked on whiteboards so they could edit and rework their sentence before writing into their books. We will continue to work on this during the next couple of lessons.

Dynamic, determined dodgeball 🏐🤾

In PE we have been learning all the different skills needed in a game of dodgeball. This week we have began to think tactically and apply this to a game. To be successful in this lesson we need to play fairly using the rules of the game and show honesty and admit if you are out. To warm up we played “Catch stuck in the mud”. Two pupils were taggers with a ball. If pupils were hit below the shoulder with a live ball they stood in place. Two pupils were ‘free-ers’ with a ball each. Stuck players could rejoin the game when passed to by a free-er. We really enjoyed this game and continued to practice our throwing skills. We then put this into practice and played a mini game of dodgeball.

Recognising 6, 7 and 8

In maths, we have started looking at the numbers 6, 7 and 8. To start us off, we worked together in small groups to sort different representations of each number. We talked about what we could see and why we thought it represented a certain number. If we felt we had made any mistakes, we discussed it together and corrected our choices.

French – Crew Shields 🇫🇷

To develop our work on clothing items in French, we looked at how we would give an opinion. We talked about the French for ‘I like’ and ‘I do not like’ and applied this by verbalising whether we liked different outfits displayed on the board. We then began to think about our understanding of the terminology, as well as looking at applying this to writing in French. We collectively created a crew clothing catalogue and each designed an outfit and then wrote sentences to describe it, thinking carefully about whether it was a masculine or feminine word and the sentence structure needed to make the sentence make sense in French.

We have started to work on our next unit of learning in French – Numbers and Age! We began by being given a maths calculation, only it did not have digits, the numbers were written in words… French words! We had to work together to recognise any cognates or near cognates that might help us to work out the English definition. We managed to work out the French for 6 and 3 and then used this information to decide what 1, 2, 4 and 5 were. It was a little tricky as some of the French equivalents are nothing like the English but we managed it eventually!

We then embedded our understanding by playing a game where Miss McGlone said a number in French, we had to hide our fingers and once she said un, deux, trois, allez we then revealed our fingers. We were successful if we held up the matching amount of fingers to the number called out. This helped us with our listening skills.

To improve our pronunciation skills, we then played a board game where we had to roll a dice on the iPad. We then moved our playing piece the same amount of spaces only we had to count out loud in French. As an extra task, if we landed on a space where there was a colour splat, we had to say the colour in French. If we got it correct, we earned an extra turn to throw the dice! The winner was the one who arrived in the centre space first.

We have been looking at a song called ‘Grandma Rap’ in our music lessons. We began our learning by finding the beat to the song using body percussion. Then, to help us learn the lyrics, we created actions for different parts of the song. We listened to the performance track of the song and practised using our actions at the right moment.

In the following lesson, we started by recapping the actions we had created before looking in more detail at the lyrics. We were incredibly quick to pick them up and we think that is because we created actions to help us to remember them! We focused hard on keeping in time with the backing track, and with each other – talking about how a crotchet is a ‘walking’ duration.

As a snapshot, to showcase our skills, we practised a song called ‘Hi lo chicka lo’. It teaches us all about how our voices move up and down. We added some hand actions in to match the pitch of our voice and performed these with a partner. We found this quite tricky but we persevered and tried our best regardless! Well done everyone! ✨

Crew Marsh – Music 🎶

We have been looking at a chant called ‘Football’ in our music lessons. We started by looking at the rhythm of the chant, practising clapping to the beat together and staying in time. We then looked at the lyrics, thinking about how we could perform them rhythmically and with clear diction.

In our next lesson, we then applied clapping to the beat whilst performing. It helped us to think about keeping in time with one another as this piece does not have a backing track. Once we had mastered this, we then added our own percussion accompaniment to keep the beat.

As a snapshot, to showcase our skills, we practised a song called ‘Rain is falling down’. It teaches us all about how our voices move up and down. We added some actions to match the pitch of our voice and even split into two groups to create a call-and-response version of the song!

National Storytelling Week! 📖📚

Dear Parents/Carers, 

As you may be aware, this week the children and adults within school have been celebrating National Storytelling Week here at Carcroft Primary School.

Throughout the week the children have been participating in a range of engaging activities including sharing their favourite stories, listening to stories, taking part in drama activities and much more!

Tomorrow (Friday 2nd February) will be the last day of this fabulous week and as a celebration we are asking both children and adults to come to school in their pyjamas, lounge wear or general comfy clothes! Children will be exploring ‘bedtime stories’ as well as books for our older children that are perfect for reading as they drift off to sleep! 💤 Children are welcome to come to school in their dressing gowns but please can you also ensure that they have a coat as the weather is still a little chilly ❄. Children are also welcome to bring their slippers to school but will need sensible footwear to wear outside at break and lunch times. For this school event we will not be asking for any monetary donations.

We look forward to welcoming the children into school tomorrow in their pjs and celebrating the end of a successful Storytelling Week! 📚📖
