Challenge crew

This morning we headed to the forest to play forty forty for our challenge crew; its just like hide and seek but with a twist. We had to excel in communication and teamwork skills and ensure we made it back home to our base! Well done Crew Mcloughlin.

Challenge Crew in Crew Boswell

Today our challenge crew was to follow a simple instruction: “build a tower of shoes”. After enthusiasm saw multiple towers, we worked together to build one taller tower which we then measured. The question is, can we do better next time? And before you ask, we took it outside to enjoy the weather, not because of the smell! 😉

First Aid Training 🔥🚿🧑‍⚕🏥

Last Friday afternoon, Crew FE had the opportunity to receive some First Aid Training to enable them to deal with some situations such as chocking and scalding. We spent the first part of the session learning about chocking and how to deal with someone who might be chocking. We learnt that if they are coughing then let them cough but the moment they are silent and turn blue then we must give them 5 back slaps and if still chocking, 5 further abdominal thrusts. Scary stuff but very worth knowing! Miss Burge and the children enjoyed demonstrating this with each other! We also then learnt about burns and the different types of burns such as chemical, hot, cold, friction and wet, and what examples of these looked like such as wet = cup of hot tea. We learnt how to deal with burns with the two most important things being: apply water for 20 minutes and then cover with cling film, yes cling film! We finished the session with learning who we should call in an emergency and what we should say. A very beneficial session and I feel that we have all come away learning something new and vital!

Carcroft staff continuing to work on being ‘crew’…

This morning, we started our school week by developing our staff crew. At XP Trust we work hard to build crew with our pupils but also within our staff team too. We started the week talking about the highlight of our weekend with staff from other phases as we don’t often get enough time to mingle across phases.

Then we paired up and played the communication game. We had to describe the picture in front of us to our partner who could not see it. We thought carefully about our use of language and how to explain things to our partner so that they would understand. We managed a quick debrief to discuss what barriers we faced when completing the activity before dashing off to greet our crews ready for another fun filled week.

It was a lovely start to the week, with lots of smiles all round.

Maths in MI

We enjoyed lots of chanting of our timestables in our magic maths sessions today. Then we did some quick recall on whiteboards, really pushing our pace. We recapped our knowledge of place value before taking part in a loop card activity. This involved quick thinking and working out answers quickly to see who had the answer to the question.

We then did a carousel of arithmetic, thinking about our pace and ensuring we remembered all the methods we had been taught. We worked with a partner for the carousel and there was some great coaching taking place. This was a pleasure to see where children were coaching children through the different methods needed whilst offering support at the same time.

Book Talk – Monday

Today we started our new book ”The Rhythm of the Rain”. First, we completed a jigsaw of the front cover and then we unpicked the title and blurb. We had a fantastic class discussion where we identified the audience, purpose and genre of the book. We are so excited to start and read this book tomorrow. 📖📚

Notation

During music today, the children have been learning about different notes in music. We’ve learned about the crotchet, minim, quavers, semi quavers and semibreve.

We spent some time clapping rhythms to help use understand the difference in the notes. Children then had to work in small groups to compose their own rhythms using some of the difference notes before performing to the rest of the class. They did a great job with these. Check them out for yourselves…
