Mindful Monday

In our Crew this morning, we shared our feelings and started to learn about how to keep our minds healthy. We unpicked what the word ‘mental’ means and then discussed ‘mental well-being’. After a crew conversation around what we all enjoy doing, we completed a yoga task to start our day off calmly and positive.

During our debrief, we reflected on what we had learned about why it is important to look after ourselves.

Summer, ‘It is important to keep mentally healthy so that you can be positive.’

Levi, ‘If you have a good mental health you can think better and clearer.’

Lydia, ‘It’s important to look after ourselves to live a happy and healthy life.’

Shelby, ‘The yoga was calming and can help you let out any stresses. You can do this at home too.’

Joshua, ‘I am going to try and make sure I sleep for longer to be healthier.’

Book talk in MI

Our entry ticket allowed us to think about the word inventor and what it means. We tried to think of any words that belong to this word family. We thought about the root word first and what it meant. Children thought about the word invent, inventing and invention. We shared our understanding of the word with the whole crew.

We then looked at some of the vocabulary that would appear in the text. Before we were introduced to the word class of each word, we discussed this with our partner. We also tried to put each word into context to help us gain a better understanding of what the words meant. As we read, we then text marked these words. We also tried to circle any other unfamiliar vocabulary and tried to think of one fact that we thought was really interesting. We placed an exclamation mark by this fact. We shared this with our partner then with the whole crew. Our reasons to read challenged our thinking 🙂 We even voiced our own opinions on the invention of the telephone.

Tomorrow we will continue with our book talk session where we will read about Josephine Garis Cochrane, the lady who invented the dishwasher!

Mock SATS week ✅

After a successful mock SATS week, Y6 had some quality crew time together on Thursday afternoon spent eating chocolate cake, dancing and laughing. Well deserved Y6, they have done us proud this week!

Edit and redraft ✍️

In our writing lesson today, we had the opportunity to use our new dictionaries and thesauruses when editing and redrafting our work. First, we used our target grids to help us unpick the targets we need to work on and then we collaboratively chotted a model redraft. We then had a go at redrafting independently.

Art in Crew Hamill 🧑🏻‍🎨

Today, Crew Hamill began their next art slice by looking at our new focus artist – Jessa Dupuis. Before we were given any information on our artist, we were shown some of her art work that we critiqued using our critique norms – be kind, be specific and be helpful. We loved looking at her work and found it unique compared to some of the other art work we have studied this year. We loved the use of colour and loved how the images appeared to layer on top of each other. Once we’d finished our critique, we looked through information on Jessa Dupuis to find out more about the inspiration behind her art. We loved that she was inspired by the weird and wonderful! We cannot wait to use her collage technique to begin our own piece of collage work.

Demo Comp – Dear Vampire 🧛

Following our book talk for the first half of this week, we spent yesterday completing some demonstration comprehension questions. We watched as Miss Hamill explained how to identify key information within the question which we could then find in the text and read around in order to support us in finding an accurate and specific answer. We then worked in pairs to use these strategies to identify the answers to some further questions about the book.

Book Talk – Dear Vampire 🧛

This week, we focused on our new book – Dear Vampire. We have spent a lot of time making ourselves familiar with the vocabulary within the book to ensure we can read fluently. We made initial predictions on what we thought the story might be about before we read the introduction which gave us a sneak peek. Following this, we predicted what we thought would happen next and were interested to have our first read to see if we were correct. We have delved deep into what the story is actually about within our book talk lessons and answered some retrieval questions using Fastest Finger and some inference questions that have made us think!

Journey to the Arctic 🐻‍❄️ ⛵️

Today we thought about Tom’s Journey to the Arctic. We made origami paper boats and then sailed them across the frozen water in our tough tray. We talked about what Tom would see on his journey and the effects big and small waves would have on his boat. We also talked about the vastness of the ocean and how he might feel lonely on his adventure.  Great work crew, I am looking forward to reading your writing!

Tom’s Dad has gone missing!📰

When we got in from break today we heard our classroom door make a strange noise, we had been delivered a newspaper that told us the great explorer (Tom’s Dad) had gone missing in North Pole.

We decided that we wanted to help, so we all wrote our own newspaper describing what Tom’s Dad looked like and where he had gone missing. We then told the rest of the school about this by posting it under their classroom doors.
