Tudor house with charcoal

This afternoon, Crew Ramsay have been continuing using charcoal as a medium for art. Today, they were drawing a Tudor house using a marking making, blending, lines and shapes. We spent some time looking at the shapes used to help us structure our own drawing. We discussed the shapes and how to put these together to draw a Tudor house. Once we had finished, children conducted a gallery walk and started to think of the class praises and wonders.

Crew challenges in Crew Gray

Over the past few weeks in Crew Gray, we have been working together to take on a series of crew challenges. These activities have helped us build important skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. One of our favourite challenges involved giving clear instructions to our partner to help them recreate a drawing — without showing them the original! We quickly learned that using precise language and listening carefully made a big difference. By working together and communicating well, we were able to complete the task successfully!

Confidence is key!

Today in our reading lesson, we worked really hard as a crew and showed just how confident we have become at discussing the texts we read. We had in-depth discussions about our text and made some great links to our expedition topic. Mrs. Rankin was incredibly impressed with our ideas and opinions, and we were proud of how well we used our retrieval skills to answer questions. We are really growing as readers and enjoying our non-fiction texts along the way!

Creation – How do Christians and Jews believe the world was created?

In RE, year 1 have been learning about how the world began. Last week, we investigated things around the world to help us understand that lots of things occur naturally on the Earth such as trees, sunsets, mountains and animals. This week, we have learned about what Christians believe and their belief is that God created the world. We watched a video that explained how God created the world in 7 days and created an anchor chart.

Inputs – How do we control a computer?

In year 1, we have been learning about how to control a computer and that we usually do this by pressing buttons. Before we started our new learning, we recapped our learning from last week. We recapped our actions to help us remember monitor, mouse, keyboard and printer before using an interactive game to place the labels in the correct place.

The children were really excited to learn that Miss Shields had a remote control that allowed her to control the actions of the children. When she pressed the blue button, the children had to jump up and wave their arms. When she pressed the red button, they had to tap their knees. Then when she pressed the green button, they had to lie down and pretend their were sleeping. This was great fun which helped us understand that buttons result in actions.

We then worked together to design a robot that we thought would help Mrs Barber. The children suggested help with RWI and all the things she needs to remember.

Crew Ramsay as artists

Today in expedition we have been artists. We have worked really hard to use charcoal effectively to create our own sketch of Carcroft School. We had a practice of using different skills and techniques before applying this knowledge to our learning. Miss Holdsworth was really impressed that we remembered some of our key words when praising each others work, such as blending and outline. We were so proud of the beautiful work we produced, we showcased this by completing a gallery walk.

Inputs in computing

In computing, we started the lesson by recapping the different parts of the computer and the purpose of these parts. We then started to investigate inputs which was focused on type buttons we have on different devices. When we press buttons, we are giving the computer commands and asking it to perform a job. We then designed our own robot thinking about the commands we would like to be able to give it. Miss Shields modelled drawing a robot that could do her weekly shop but most importantly put the groceries away. It was great seeing the children confidently sharing their robot design in-front of the rest of their crew.

Text Marking

Today in Crew Robson we tried to text text marking for the first time. We talked through what all the symbols mean and then unpicked an example before having a go independently.

Our feelings

Continuing with The Colour Monster in our expedition, crew Frost have been exploring their own feelings, and choose a colour monster to represent it. We explored why we might feel this way and all feelings are ok and there are ways to change them. Now we are building strong knowledge on our emotions we are ready for our feelings check in’s!
