Character fact building

We are very excited in Crew Shields as we’ve started reading a new text linked to our expedition. After reading chapter 1, the crew were asked to start collating information about the characters. This helped the crew build on their fact and retrieval skills as well as inference and summary. Fantastic to see some great crew collaboration.

How do we see?

During our science lesson, the children learned that we are able to see because light reflects off non luminous objects and this is then sent to our eyes. When light reflects off an object, it bounces off at the exact same angle. To further develop learning, the crew made periscopes. They were able to explain how light enters the top wndow and hits the first mirror, this light is then reflected at a 45 degree angle down the periscope to the second mirror. The light bounces off this mirror into the eye.

Our next writing unit in MI

Last Friday was our first experience day of our new writing unit. We watched a clip of a girl who attended the Martin Luther King Jr’s speech. We reflected on what we had seen then built ideas from the clip using our senses and some of the writing lenses. We took part in a gallery walk to magpie ideas for our mini crew and praised each groups ideas. Finally, we built some figurative language based on what we will write about in plot point 1 of our setting descriptions.

Today we took part in a grammar day with a focus on cohesive devices. We firstly watched some clips looking at main clauses and subordinate clauses. We consolidated our knowledge through a variety of activities before building our own sentences using subordinating conjunctions within sentences and at the start of sentences. We worked with our partner well to move sentences around. During our afternoon session, we looked at adverbials and experimented with prepositional phrases. We unpicked a model of writing then finally built our own sentences using different adverbials and prepositional phrases. Here you can see some of our work as well as our anchor chart showing all the work we have built together. I can’t wait for you to get writing PP1.

Shapes!

Today in Crew Welburn, we have been looking at 2D shapes. We learnt all about squares and rectangles, and then used a range of shapes to create pictures. Lots of these ended up on our proud pieces wall as we worked really hard to create them and to talk about the shapes and their properties within the pictures.

Week 2 in Crew Welburn

We had lots of fun in Crew Welburn last week. We explored our provision areas, began working on our final product plant pots so that the base coats were dry, and began looking at how the numbers 4 and 5 are made within our maths lessons. We also had a go at challenging ourselves to independently make and write words using our phonics sounds! Miss Welburn was very impressed with our Fred talk and blending.

Consolidating learning on mymaths

After completing our do now on converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, we completed different activities on mymaths to consolidate our learning. We really did reflect on the achievements we had already made and challenged ourselves further to improve 🙂 Our exit ticket then challenged us even further, however we worked collaboratively and supported each other to find the answers. A fab maths lesson MI 🙂

Completing Crazy Circuits!

This week as part of our Expedition, ‘The Power of Life’, children have really enjoyed creating, exploring and investigating circuits in Crew Pashley. Initially, children were given the key components and left to work as mini crews to create a simple circuits. Some crew members were a whizz at this and completed it within record time! Throughout the week we then explored what happened when additional components were added such as multiple bulbs and multiple batteries. We also spent some time exploring conductors and insulators and the affect that they had on the circuit. Ask us about it and we will happily share our findings! Next week, we will be writing a report all about it!
