Today we had a a very special visit from a local artist, Ms Rocket. We explored how to create a self portrait using our sketching skills. We cant wait to see our final product surprise 🤫

Crew Shields made the most of the sunshine this afternoon by going out and sketching with charcoal. As part of our hook week, we have been discussing the community and recapped how Carcroft came into existence because of the coal mining industry. They learned that our school was built for the purpose of educating the miners children so it was only fitting that we sketched some of the building with charcoal.
We haven’t used charcoal as a medium for art before so this was a new experience but something we all enjoyed. Even better that we were catching some rays of sunshine.

Well all I can say is WOW!
Not only have the children blown me away with their sketching but they have impressed me with their perseverance. Even though, sketching isn’t their favourite subject they haven’t let it defeat them and give it 100%. I am beyond proud of them and it’s lovely they’ve shared how they are proud of themselves.

During our expedition lessons this week, we have completed our first draft of Martin Luther King. When we finished we hd a gallery walk to allow us to appreciate the hard work everyone had put in to their art work. We then discussed critique and how we could make them even better next time. Although they were a first draft, I’m extremely proud of what they have produced and it was lovely hearing them express how they were proud of themselves during check out. Keep an eye out for the next draft…

We have been practising our cutting skills whilst making a couscous salad. Michael has blown us away with his culinary skills 👨🍳

Yesterday, we explored a range of sketching pencils and how they create a different effect when using sketching techniques. When we’d had an opportunity to use each of the pencils, we had a go at applying this to a small section of Edgar Degas artwork.

It has been lovely today as we started our 3rd and final case study of our current expedition. Children were researching Edgar Degas who was a french impressionist known for his drawings of ballerinas.
As a crew we had the opportunity to recreate some of his work using skills we have learning previously. The children have done a super job considering they don’t particularly like art as they feel it is the subject they are least confident in. However, they did not let this deter them from putting 100% effort in. It was especially nice hearing them share in crew how they felt happy because they thought they’d be terrible but had actually done a really good job.

Our crew have been following instructions in our writing experience lessons to create artwork to supplement their writing. We listened carefully how to draw our own cat. The cat was trying to catch the egg! But the egg shouted……. We can’t wait to write about it! Dom was our writing superstar the previous lesson when the dog chased the egg!

Today we used out DT skills to cut and chop vegetables for our couscous salad. We enjoyed tasting it too! 🫑🥒🍋
