Do you brush your teeth?

This week in Crew we have been exploring the importance of brushing our teeth, daily. We explored the effects of different drinks on our teeth by using eggs, the shell is similar to our tooth enamel. We placed an egg in water, dilute juice and a fizzy drink. We were shocked to see how the dilute juice impacted the egg shell, causing it to dissolve. This reiterated how important to brush our teeth twice a day, before bed and in the morning. It was fascinating to watch how the shells dissolved and made some really strange formations after just leaving it in the liquid for a day. Imagine not brushing your teeth for a day!

Today, we were very lucky to take part in a wonderful experience brought to us by M&M productions, The Jungle Book. Many of us knew the story of Mowgli and it was fantastic to see the story brought to life!

Islamic Art work

Today we created our Islamic tiles. We have been exploring the work of William Morris, a British designer who used lots of patterns in his artwork. We were lucky to hear from our very own expert, Mr Hull, about William Morris’ art work as he has visited his house to have a look at some very exciting pieces. We used techniques previously taught to design our own tiles which will have a very special home in a local mosque.

Exploring the Islamic faith

During our expedition lesson we have been exploring mosques, an Islamic place of worship for people of the Muslim faith. We discovered that Mosque buildings have large open spaces inside, with mats or carpets covering the floor. Men perform prayers, under the guidance of an imām, who is a worship leader in the Muslim community. When women pray in the mosque, they must be in a separate space to the men. We discovered that Muslims pray five times a day and a special prayer mat is used to ensure cleanliness between the worshipper and the ground.

Scottie’s Heroes

This week in Scottie’s was such a challenge! We worked hard to be observant without using our voices. We worked as a team to patrol our forest school, to look for unknown items, which many were camouflaged. It was tricky to start with however once we started looking beyond the bright coloured objects it became much easier. Charlie was our work hard hero this week.

Water Safety

Today, we were very lucky to be part of a live talk with Yorkshire Water about the importance of being safe near water. It was really interesting to listen to some of the hidden dangers around open water. The main messages were to stay away from the edge and ensuring that we don’t try to go in after someone who is having difficulty. It’s important that we call for help and don’t put ourselves into danger. We ended the call with a quiz, safe to say we had all discovered so much and scored full marks! We then continued our work by spotting hidden dangers and creating water safety posters to share with our grown ups.

Crew Challenge

Today we had our smelly socks our in our crew challenge! Our challenge was to create a ‘Leaning Tower of Feetza’. It was such a pleasure to see the children collaborating independently and being resilient when our towers tumbled!

A smelly crew challenge

Today our crew challenge was the Leaning Tower of Feetza.

The children worked in small groups to build the tallest freestanding tower using only their shoes. It was lovely to see them all working together and supporting each other even if it was a little smelly afterwards!!

Practise makes perfect!

Practise, practise, practise! Crew Godley have been trying so hard to develop their handwriting skills, making sure our letters are formed from the correct point, sat on the line and have correct ascenders and descenders. It’s a lot to remember but we are stating to see some real improvements!
