Maths – capacity 💧

We have been investigating capacity in Crew MW. We had a number of containers on our table and had to discuss which we thought would hold the most and the least water. The only way we could find out was to investigate by filling them up!

We made our predictions before counting how many cups of water it would take to fill each container. We worked with a partner to compare the coloured pots first, we all thought that the taller pot would hold the most water.

We were correct! It held 2 cups of water, whereas the smaller pot held only 1 cup.

We then worked as a group to look at the 3 cylindrical containers. We were all very sure that the tallest container would hold the most but we were undecided on whether the thinner or the wider containers would hold the most… so we investigated it!

We were right about the tallest container, that held 8 cups of water! The container that held the least was the small, thin container – that only held 1 cup. The wider, but shorter container held 2 cups of water.

A special delivery from Goldilocks 👱🏻‍♀️🥣

We found a special treat left for us in our classroom… from Goldilocks! She had left us a tray with a bag of oats, milk, bowls, spoons and cups along with a note. The note contained instructions on how to make porridge.

We then worked as a crew to follow the instructions to make the porridge. As we tipped the oats into the bowl, we said that they looked dry and dusty. Max even said that they looked like crumbs! It was funny when we tipped the milk in because all the oats turned sticky so we started to mix. It took a while to mix it but after a while, it started to come together and was ready for the microwave.

We kept checking and stirring it, making sure that it was all mixed together. It started to get hot and we could feel it if we put our hands over the top of it. Some of the porridge even changed colour around the edge of the bowl.

Once the porridge was done, we added some sugar before we all had chance to try it! We waited until it cooled down a little before tucking in! We talked about what it tasted like and said that it was creamy, yummy and tasty.

Thank you Goldilocks!

French – Crew Hamill, Crew Thompson and Crew Mcloughlin 🇫🇷🖼

We looked at the artwork of the French artist, Matisse and talked about how he uses colour and shape to create abstract pieces of art. We looked at some of his pieces based on animals and decided to create our own piece of Matisse-inspired artwork… with a twist! So that we could create our piece, we had to work with a partner to ask them in French for certain shapes, but we were only allowed to use 6! We had to include information about the size, shape and colour we needed. Some of us even challenged ourselves by saying ‘I would like…, please’ and ‘thank you’ in French too!

Once we had finished, we did a gallery walk around the classroom to view the pieces created by the rest of our crew. We shared praises and notices whilst we were moving around the room. Take a look at some of our finished pieces! ✨

Building a bridge to escape the troll 👹

After reading the Three Billy Goat’s Gruff, we decided we wanted to build a bridge that crossed the water tray so that the animals could cross over safely. Harlow and Hunter decided that it would be a good idea to use wood from the small world area but after trying to lay it across the tray, they realised that it was too short to cross on its own and so they tried to lay two pieces of wood across the tray. This made it longer but they were not secured and so kept falling into the water below. They worked together with Carsen and Kingsley to wrap tape around both pieces to secure them together. This worked and the bridge successfully provided a route for the water animals!

MI create their own story…

MI have been super busy creating their own story for the year 1 children. We are all so proud of the story we have created and well done to everyone in MI for contributing 🙂 Here it is…

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess called Abby. She had long blonde hair that looked like locks of gold. Her stunning blue eyes sparkled like diamonds and hypnotised anyone who came in front of her. Her kind and caring personality made her popular and her huge heart made her the most wonderful person ever! Rick had emerald green eyes but he was a poor man and struggled to survive. His hair was brown with hints of blonde and he longed to find his true love. His heart was sad because he had no other family.

One day the princess was taking a stroll around the majestic lake when she came across a hideous, evil witch! All of a sudden, the witch grabbed the princess and dragged her into the forest. As they got deeper and deeper into the forest, the princess saw a dark cave in front of her. There was a dangerous shadow all around and she knew she was in trouble. The witch threw her into the cave and placed a spell on her meaning she couldn’t escape.
“Hahaha I have you now and you won’t ever escape!“ Cackled the witch in the scariest voice.
“Please let me go, I need to get back to my family.” Replied the Princess, crying as she spoke.

A couple of days passed and Rick was busy chopping wood in the forest for his fire. Suddenly, there in front of him was an old lady who came over and spoke. She explained she had heard voices in the forest and wanted him to help. As the two walked deeper into the forest they heard a scream.
“What do you think that is?” Called the lady.
“I don’t know but let’s go and find out,” The man replied.

The two bolted as fast as lightning and came to the entrance of the cave. There in front of them was the disgusting figure of the witch. As quick as a flash the lady and witch started to battle against each other. Their long, sharp swords kept crashing against each others until the lady voiced a spell and this turned the witch into tiny particles that shot like a bullet into the sword. The witch was now trapped forever.

The princess was also still trapped. Rick tried hard to break her free but the iron bars were just too strong. Rick looked into her eyes and knew he had fallen in love. The lady pointed her magical wand at the bars and soon the bars turned to ice. Another spell happened and suddenly the ice burned! The princess was now free!

Rick shouted, “Princess, will you marry me?”
“Yes I would love to,” She replied. “You have saved my life!”

The princess and Rick ran off into the sunset, making their way back to the Princess’ castle. They lived happily ever after together.

Money, money, money 💰

Crew Godley have been working hard, to get smart this week so that they can make their millions in years to come! We started our new unit, all about money. Jax was a superstar and could name and order the coins by value. We matched coins to values and then played a game on the iPads to reinforce our learning, well done Crew Godley!
