Crew in MI- World book day

In preparation for World Book Day on Thursday, Crew MI started to think about their favourite books favourite characters. We created an anchor chart to show our ideas.

We then thought about the reasons why we read and the places we like to read. We even discussed how we like to read! We enjoyed some time reading in these positions 🙂

We then listened to each other reading which was so lovely! We even circled up and did this 🙂 We have really enjoyed our activities today and are looking forward to more tomorrow.

World book day preparation in MI :)

Today MI read and shared a story with the children in foundation. They discussed the front cover and blurb with the children before reading the story. At the end they asked the children a few questions… Which part was your favourite? Which character did you like? Did you enjoy the story? Why? Crew MI loved sharing stories with the younger children and tried hard to use some expression whilst they read. A lovely time together in the library.

Demo comprehension in Crew MI

Today, we recapped the vocabulary we have learnt this week by matching it to pictures. After that we read our text and discussed it together. We helped Mrs Ibbotson to answer questions and we really unpicked how to answer ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘who’ and ‘when’ questions. Finally, we challenged ourselves to answer another impressions question where we used APE to help us.

Book talk continues in MI

Lots of great reading today in MI 🙂 We spent lots of time reading the text over and over. We read independently out loud, we read with our partner and we took part in a chorus read. We explored our new vocabulary and text marked this as we read. We were confident with the questions in our reasons to read and used the text well to support some of our answers. We loved our exit ticket where we had to use all the knowledge we had learnt from reading the text to draw and label our vision of Egypt. We shared these with our partners and then as a whole crew 🙂

Our entry ticket allowed us to compare Nigeria and Sierra Leone, the text we looked at last week. We then played 4 corners looking at some of the vocabulary that would appear in our text today. We loved playing this and really thought about words in context and the word class of each word. We supported each other and discussed the words before moving to the corner we thought was correct. Today we did some independent reading but we all read out-loud. We tried to work on the pace of our reading, Mrs McClare even set timers for some parts! Our reasons to read allowed us to think about our impression of Africa but we had to use the text to support our answer. We then read the next part of the text, this time with our partners. We text marked our new vocabulary as we read. Our reasons to read on this section showed we had understood what we had read 🙂 Our exit ticket allowed us to give our opinion on South Africa, using the text to support our thoughts.

Demonstration comprehension

Today we carried on reading our book about Africa and focussed on the country Nigeria. We answered a range of ‘why?’ questions and then answered using ‘because….. to explain using the evidence from the text. As a challenge, we answered an impressions question where we used APE to help us to answer. We had a go at writing our answers on post its and then Mrs Ibbotson modelled it.
