Roman Gods and Goddesses in History

Today in Crew Colclough we learned that Romans believed in more than one God/ Goddess and we started to explore 8 of them in today’s lesson. We had to move around the room and copy the name and role of the God/Goddess onto our sheet. Mrs Atherton then challenged us by asking us to memorise 3 of them and their roles and then copy these into our books using Capital Letters for Nouns and beautiful handwriting. We worked incredibly hard today to remember this information.

Making variables

In computing this weel, year 4 were continuing with variables but this week they were making variables and adding to the code we used last week. Once they got the hang of it, children started to expand their maths games by adding additional questions to the code. Children really had to grapple with this and be resilient to ensure that they were successful.

Year 4 Litter Picking

We headed outside to tidy up the Year 1 area, making it a clean and pleasant space for the younger students. They worked diligently, picking up loose leaves and stray litter, and organising the outdoor toys and equipment. By taking on the task of tidying the space, the children demonstrated responsibility and a shared commitment to keeping their school environment tidy.

LKS2 Expedition

This week, our Year 4 pupils have been exploring the fascinating differences between their lives today and those in Roman times! They learned that while Romans traveled by horse and chariot and enjoyed simple meals like bread and olives, we now zip around in cars and indulge in a world of diverse cuisines. Entertainment has also evolved—from thrilling gladiator games to streaming movies and video games! Plus, communication has transformed dramatically; instead of sending messages via messengers, we now connect instantly through texts and social media. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come and what we might miss most if we lived in the past!

Variables when coding

In year 4, we have continued exploring Scratch and learning about variables. Children learned that variables can store lots of different answers and the programme will respond accordingly. We played some games where children had to ask their crew the name of an animal or food but had to erase the previous answer if it was different. This allowed children to see that the variables were limitless. Working as a crew, we built the code on our iPads as this was new learning for us. Once we’d built the code, we experimented with different questions and answers. In our next session we will build on today’s learning.

Year 4 Road Safety!

Year 4 pupils participated in a special road safety course today, equipping them with essential skills for navigating roads safely. The engaging and practical session focused on crucial pedestrian skills, including safely crossing the road using the Green Cross Code, understanding different crossings, and identifying potential dangers posed by traffic. The students were enthusiastic participants, and we encourage parents to reinforce these important lessons at home to help their children develop responsible road habits.

Exploring Scratch – position and orientation

In computing this week, children in Year 4 were continuing to explore Scratch which is something we learned about last year. However, we were developing our understanding by learning about the position and orientation of our sprite. This allowed us to make links to our prior maths units of coordinates and angles. It was so lovely seeing the experts support the less confident children as well as them grappling with it when it got a little tricky.

Carcroft Crew Graffiti Project

Today we worked together as a whole school crew to design and create our very own graffiti wall! With the support of expert graffiti artists, we learned new skills and used our creativity to celebrate everything that makes Crew special. From sharing ideas and sketching designs, to choosing colours and spraying the final masterpiece, we collaborated as one team to bring our vision to life. Our graffiti wall now stands as a bold reminder that when we work together, we can achieve something amazing!

Fieldwork to Murton Park

KS2 have had an amazing day at Murton Park immersing themselves into life as Romans. We have made oil lamps, learnt Latin, joined the Roman Army and fought the Celts.

The children conducted themselves so well and we are extremely proud of them all.

Hopefully everything we have learned today we can build on over the course of our expedition as we learn more about the Romans and why they decided to come to Doncaster.
