We had so much fun with our PE coaches this morning! We learnt lots of new ball skills like bouncing balls and throwing balls! We worked in teams to use our ball skills to collect the pirate treasure and then counted up the treasure to see which team had won! Once we knew how to play the game, we turned off the lights and played it while we glowed! It was so much fun!
In crew this morning we started to explore mental health ready for our expert visit in the afternoon, a talk from a mental health nurse. This visit links to our current expedition but is also preparing us nicely for mental health week next week.
We started our discussion this morning by thinking about what mental health is, what we mean by mental health issues and how we can look after our mental health. We discussed rights of children and why everyone’s voice matters. From here we explored a scenario and unpicked what the scenario was saying. We discussed the feelings of the character in the scenario then thought about the difference between mental health and physical health.
We then thought more about our own crew and the things that make us feel more confident and comfortable. We discussed following our crew norms, listening carefully to what others have to say and never laughing at other peoples questions. We discussed that no questions are ‘silly’. More discussions will continue in Crew tomorrow.
Next we thought about some of the questions we would like to ask the expert in the afternoon. We came up with some great questions, ‘what are some of the different mental health issues? How do you help people? How do you treat them? How do you help people to get better? Can you prevent mental health problems? What do I do if I’m worried about my mental health? What should I do if i’m worried about a friend? How do I spot signs of mental ill health? What are the symptoms of anxiety? How many times do you see a patient?’ Tomorrow we will discuss how our expert links back to our guiding questions.
Today, we were able to have a chat with an expert about our current expedition. A mental health nurse came to talk to us about mental health and their role in looking after people’s mental health. We learnt more about what our mental health is and why it is important to look after it. This linked to our expedition because if we have a healthy lifestyle, it is easier to enjoy stronger mental health. We looked at how connecting with others, being present in the moment, keeping active, helping others and keeping our minds learning new things are all strategies that we can do to avoid negative mental health concerns. Our expert told us about the network we have around us that we can turn to if we need and pointed out that a lot of what can affect our mental health is often beyond our circle of control. We even got chance to ask some of our own questions about mental health and the type of work that he has seen.
Ultimately, the best way that we can keep mentally healthy is by understanding our own mental health and not being afraid to talk to someone if things start to feel too much for us – it’s normal for people to need help!
This week in expedition, we have been comparing Cleethorpes and Carcroft! We have been using our noticing lense and talking about what we could see, and how we feel when we visited each place. Have a look about what we thought about each place and our comparisons…
Crew MW had a wonderful day on Monday! We got on a coach and went to visit Cleethorpes! As part of our expedition learning, we wanted to experience the seaside and the difference between Carcroft and Cleethorpes. We spent the day playing in the sand, building sand castles, paddling, playing with the parachute and talking about what we could see. It was so lovely to see so many happy, excited faces as we explored! We can’t wait to do our writing about what we saw.
This morning, we looked at the front cover of our new story for Case Study 1 – Why is the seaside a special place? We started by saying what we noticed using the picture on the front cover and the title of the story to help us. Here’s what we came up with…
After reading the story, we talked about how the children felt at each point in the book. We used lots of new vocabulary such as, excited, joyful and giddy to describe how the children were feeling. We can’t wait to find out more about the seaside!
Some of the nursery children enjoyed playing with different sensory textures this morning during provision and getting messy with the shaving foam! Shaving foam is definitely a firm favourite of the crew! The children used words like sticky, slimey, soft and messy to describe the different textures.
