Exploring Steven Brown

Today we began the art section of case study one by looking at the modern artist Steven Brown.

First we did a gallery walk to immerse ourselves and then shared notices and wonders.

We then had a go at being creative by drawing lines in the style of Steven Brown ready for our family learning on Wednesday where we will paint a hedgehog in this style.

Building Bridges!

Today in expedition, we built bridges for our billy goats to cross the river. We started by looking at some bridges that other children had made and looking at the equipment that they had used to create them. Then we worked with a partner to decide what equipment we would use to create our own bridges. We looked at which resources would make strong bridges and why they would be strong, before getting to work and building with our partners! Have a look at our creations…

Forest School Fun!

Today in Crew MW, we had a walk round to forest school to take part in some outdoor learning. We took some clay out with us and used rolling pins to roll it out flat. We then collected an interesting object like a leaf or a branch and rolled this into the clay to make a print. We were really excited with how our prints came out and we can’t wait to paint them and have a look at them all once they’ve dried!

Polar Bear Art 🐻‍❄️🖼️

Following our litter picking yesterday, Crew Hamill recycled the litter we collected and created some polar bear art! We created a giant polar bear out of the cleanest bits of litter we could find!

Whilst this was being completed, we also created mini polar bear collages using two different types of paper. Look at the cute polar bears we created – we were even able to add one to our display to join our larger polar bear!

Sculpture making in MI

Today we explored some of the sculptures Yinka our artist had created. We thought about what we could see and what we thought the art was showing and representing. We offered our own critique giving praises, notices and wonders for each piece of art. We learnt that Yinka created the art in response to migration and the structures mimic the sails of the ships as they migrate across the sea. We then looked at a model that our teachers had created! We enjoyed giving praises, notices and wonders for this! We then got busy on our own sculptures!

MI’s finished book covers

Here are our finished book covers which will be part of our cultural diversity display in our library. We enjoyed using African patterns on our art work as well as thinking about the significant people in our lives who will be on the spine of our books.

Hook week begins in MI

Today we started to explore a new artist- Yinka Shonibare. Yinka explores cultural identity and globalisation. We watched a clip to further our knowledge then worked together to produce an anchor chart. We looked at some of Yinka’s work and offered our own critique based on what we thought the art represented. We then explored African patterns thinking about what we could see, the colours used and what the patterns were like. Our mission was to create our own patterns that will be the book cover of some books in our library. Once we got creative, we ensured we kept stopping, offering critique to each other that would help us improve our work.

We then thought about what the word significant means and significant people from the past and in the world. We thought about people in our own lives that have made a significant contribution to us. These people will be placed on the spine of our books.

We all really enjoyed our morning and are excited to keep working through our art case study.
