Thackray Museum of Medicine

As part of our expedition, ‘How can a healthy lifestyle impact your body and mind?’ Y5 and Y6 visited the museum to learn about the history of medicine from the 1800’s to the modern day. As we walked round, we had a range of questions to answer in our pairs for each of the different medicine rooms that we entered. We had lots of reading to do in order to really understand how medicine has dramatically changed over the years. This meant our Work Hard and Get Smart HOWLS had to be secure so that we could be successful in our comprehension work!

John Bull Confectioners and Beach Trip! (28.6.22) 🍭🍬🏖

What a fantastic (and tiring) day we have had at Bridlington. Firstly, we visited the interesting John Bull Confectioners sweet factory. We saw how hard sweets are made and even had the chance to create our own rock. This took a lot of perseverance and effort to be able to role and mould the rock. Throughout the tour, we were lucky enough to eat a variety of sweets, chocolate and biscuits made within the factory. We even wanted to eat our rock that we had made.

After lunch, we then went to the beach. We loved our time playing with our friends on the glorious sand, under the beautiful sun. Although it was windy, it did not stop us having fun. After burning off a load of energy, we were treated to a delicious ice lolly, which helped us cool down. We would not have been able to have this, had we not raised an amazing amount of money from our cake sale a couple of months ago.

Brilliant Beamish!

What a fabulous day out we’ve had at Beamish! ☀️Travelling back in time to Durham, we had the opportunity to experience what life would have been like during the different eras, right back to the Victorian times. We explored the town with all of its wonderful shops and the bank, and we went into the different houses. We visited the dentist’s house and found out all about how the old toothbrushes were made. We certainly won’t want to think about the pig’s bottom at the same time as brushing our teeth!😬 We also got to experience a mining pit village and the cottages that would have been found in a village like this. We were amazed at the quaintness of the cottages and the thought of going to the toilet outside in the dark and cold. Our trip down the mine was also a real eye-opener, as we discovered the size if the mine and the conditions that the miners had to endure. We even met a miner who had worked at Bullcroft and Bentley! Our visit to the Victorian school was very different to our own school. The lessons were very different to ours at school (except the phonics!) and the teacher was very strict, but we still enjoyed them. We’ve had so much fun and have had lots of smiles on our faces all day.

Crew Welburn’s Tremendous Trip 🚌

Wow! What a fantastic day out we’ve had at Beamish! ☀️ After a rather long bus journey, we finally arrived in Durham and got to go back in time and experience what life would have been like during the Victorian times. We explored the town with all of its wonderful shops and the bank, and we went into the different houses. We visited a music teacher’s house, a solicitor’s house and a dentist’s house! Luckily the dentist left our wobbly teeth alone! 😬 We also got to experience a mining pit village and the cottages that would have been found in a village like this. We liked the cottages – they were warm and cosy – but we all agreed that we preferred the houses in the town because they were bigger and some of them even had toilets and baths inside! Finally, we experienced a Victorian school day. These lessons were very different to ours at school and the teacher was very strict, but we still enjoyed them. We’ve had so much fun and have had lots of smiles on our faces all day. We can’t wait to share what we found out with each other at school tomorrow 😃

Paul Chrystal Author Visit (13.6.22) 📚

Today, LKS2 were very lucky to have local author Paul Chrystal lead a discussion about our Guiding Question. Mr Chrystal has published over 120 books and we wanted to get his expertise on sweets, of which he had tonnes of knowledge to offer. During the talk, Mr Chrystal looked answered the Guiding Question ‘Why is sugar not so sweet?’ through a health angle. He talked us through how sugar is not always the healthiest, even though we all love sweets.

Collaborative working in MI

Today we continued with our history work where we researched different illnesses as mini crews. We all worked collaboratively thinking about the two rubrics we had just discussed, this made us think more about team work and listening to others. After we had gathered our information we worked together thinking about how we would present our findings to the rest of the crew. Again we thought about our rubric and how we can engage an audience. We all presented extremely well, everyone participated and everyone listened well when the other groups shared their work. Finally, we applied our knowledge to a written task, here we showed all the learning we had just done.

Slavery Source Investigation (4.5.22) 🕵️🕵️‍♂️

Today, LKS2 have been critiquing different historical sources from the past. The children looked at primary sources that Slave Traders used to sell and promote the sale of slaves right through to drawings of slave ships and human cargo. We also investigated a range of secondary sources, looking at artistic representations in slavery. We compared what it was like for African and Chinese slaves, discussing what was similar and different.

The insights were interesting and there was a buzz of discussions as we noticed, inferred and even wondered what was happening. This was a great lesson full of fantastic discussions about slavery through these valuable sources. This is helping us to understand Why sugar is not so sweet!

LKS2 Biscuit Tasting

LKS2 had a very fun lesson where they were taste testing different biscuits. The aim was to think about what types of flavours and textures we liked the most, evaluating whether we would eat them again or not and the rating out of 10. We put to test 5 different biscuits – garibaldi, custard cream, shortcake, Bourbon and malted milk. It’s fair to say there was a mix of opinions, but most loved custard creams the most. Years 3 and 4 loved sharing their opinions and debating why some biscuits were better than others.

We will now collate our data for each Crew and put them into a bar graph. Our charts will show the favourite biscuit of Crew Marsh, Flaherty and Gerrard.
