Our HoWL House Point System
At Carcroft Primary School, our HoWL House Point System plays a key role in promoting positive behaviour, teamwork, healthy competition, and a strong sense of belonging across our school community.
What is the HoWL House System?
Every child at Carcroft is part of a HoWL House — a mixed-age group that spans across year groups. This system is designed to encourage pupils to demonstrate our core HoWLs (Habits of Work and Learning) by recognising effort, attitude, and achievement in all aspects of school life.
House Names, Colours, and Emblems
Each HoWL House is named after a local Carcroft landmark and is represented by a distinct colour and emblem. These emblems were thoughtfully designed during our KS1 expedition, What Lies Within the Castle Walls, giving children real ownership and pride in their House identity.
How Pupils Earn HoWL House Points
Children can earn HoWL House Points in line with our school behaviour policy. Points are awarded as physical tokens and added to each crew’s collection tube. These are counted and celebrated during our weekly Community Meetings.
Points can be earned for:
- Academic achievement and consistent effort
- Showing respect, kindness, helpfulness, and teamwork
- Demonstrating resilience, resourcefulness, and initiative
- Achieving 100% attendance each half term
- Caring for others and our school environment
Additional points may be awarded through school-wide challenges linked to reading, attendance, home learning, British Values, and events such as the Summer Fair.
Competitions, Events, and Rewards
Points are also awarded during:
- Sporting events and extracurricular activities
- School competitions and challenge days
- Demonstrating good sportsmanship and participation
At the end of each term, the House with the most points receives a special reward — chosen by the children. A recent example was a Pizza and Ice Cream Party, won by our Canaries House!
Twice a year, in February and July, the House with the highest overall total is awarded the Philosopher’s Stone, a prestigious honour that celebrates consistent excellence and teamwork throughout the year.
