More experience fun in LKS2! 🌊🧍🏡📚📝

Today we had the great pleasure of another ‘experience lesson’! This was due to us being able to welcome a visitor into our school called Kerry Poncia (a teacher at XP) who unfortunately had first hand experience of the floods in Fishlake (in 2019) and came to share her experience with us all.

We started the lesson by recapping our current book, ‘FLOOD’, and completed a ‘silent conversation’ listing the questions that we would ask the characters from the book. Such as, how did it feel when you had to leave your home? What was it like seeing your home ruined? Have you ever had to leave your home before? Etc. This then led us to then think of some questions that we could ask Kerry prior to her visit. We recorded these on a large sheet of paper ready for her presentation in the afternoon.

In the afternoon, Kerry visited and she provided us with lots of information about floods to support us with our writing next week. It was a great afternoon and as you can see we were all hooked in by what she was saying! Mrs Elmer recorded lots of facts and emotive language so that we can use this word bank to further support our chotting and writing of plot points next week.

Reading

Today, in Crew Pashley, Brianna asked if she could read Roald Dahl’s The Witches to the crew for their after dinner transition task. It was lovely to hear her read and the whole crew were supportive of her reading out loud. They even asked her to read more! We all enjoyed it, especially me!

Crew Pashley Newsround

Today, in Crew Pashley, we finished writing our scripts about an earthquake disaster in Turkey. All the children have done amazing this week and persevered with their writing. They have all challenged themselves and the final scripts have been lovely to read. The children all performed their final scripts to each other. All children were super supportive of each other and enjoyed pretending to host the news.

Carcroft Newsroom!

Welcome to Carcroft Newsroom!

This week, children in Crew Thompson have been writing their own scripts about the recent earthquakes that happened in Turkey and Syria. Today, children had lots of fun performing these in front of the the green screen! I was really impressed with how hard the children worked and how they had lots of courage and determination to perform these. Keep up the fab work!

Sharing our Expeditionary learning in LKS2 🌋⛰🌧🌍📖

This afternoon we welcomed lots of our grown ups into school to show them our current extraordinary expedition work, ‘Earth Shattering Events’, ‘What happens when nature strikes?’. We enjoyed sharing the work that we completed during Hook Week (making a volcano, earthquake simulation, walking through water and Earth Day celebrations!), as well as the Science (rocks and soils) and Geography (mountains) coverage from Case Study One.

We also got the opportunity to share our fabulous writing including our Lava recount and our broadcasting scripts.

Thank you to all of the grown ups (and newborn babies!) who came to share their child/rens learning this afternoon. It was lovely to see how proud the children were of the beautiful work that they have been producing.

We look forward to sharing the rest of our learning with you all in July at our COL Event on Wednesday 12th July! We hope to see you then! 😁

Cricket tournament!

Today, some of our Year 3 and Year 4 children have took part in a cricket tournament. The children showed how well Carcroft School work as a team, and were cheering others on throughout the day. Their crew building and communication skills really shone through today! They got better and better as the day went on and we are sure they will be experts when they have finished doing cricket in PE!

LKS2 Recount Writing

This week, Y3/4 have been writing recounts based on the Disney short animation ’Lava’. All the children have worked super hard to write their recounts, including using amazing adjectives, onomatopoeia and time adverbials. It has been lovely to see how creative our children have been with their writing and how supportive they have been with each other to create lovely recounts.

Coronation Celebrations in LKS2!

Wow! What a FANTASTIC day we all had on Friday 5th May 2023 at Carcroft Primary School. Throughout the morning each Crew got to share their British Values Home Learning that they had done! In Crew FE we were blown away with David’s creation which was an AMAZING castle and in Crew Thompson Archie and Charlie took the limelight with their Coronation ceramic plates! Some fabulous work has taken place in lots of homes! Thank you to all of those adults at home who supported with this and to the children for bringing them in for us all to share! At lunchtime we enjoyed all sitting together and having an indoor picnic (thanks to the traditional British weather, what Bank Holiday ever passes without some rainfall!?!). In the afternoon, we then enjoyed creating crowns, flags and other Coronation memorabilia that we got to take home with us to help us to continue the celebrations over the weekend!

LKS2 Summer Hook Week

To kick start off our new expedition learning-Earth Shattering Events- Crew Pashley, Crew Thompson and Crew FE participated in various activities throughout hook week. We sketched snapshots of life in Pompeii, to create whole crew storyboards demonstrating what it was like when Mount Vesuvius erupted.

All the crews participated in a carousel of activities and experiments to begin our learning on natural disasters. We made coke and mentos volcanoes, experienced what a cold flood would feel like, and experienced what an earthquake would feel like.
