Today we started to think about changes and how they make us feel. We thought how it felt starting a new class, what we are looking forward to and the things we will miss from the last academic year. We talked about the changes we have experienced since we started our school journey in FS2. We talked about the effects of change and the importance of a positive mindset. We then thought about the word resilience, what this is and how we can show we are resilient in everything we do. We then worked in mini crews to share the ways in which we can show we are resilient.
Reasons to read
During our book talk lesson, we have worked together to answer a range of questions. We focused on the importance of using the text to support us to answer the question. Some of our questions asked for evidence from the text and this was an area we will continue to develop as we more through this year. It was great to see the children working collaboratively and working to each other’s strengths.
KS1 Fieldwork to Lincoln Castle
KS1 were hooked into their new expedition today with an amazing trip to Lincoln Castle.
We took part in 3 different workshops including shield making, knight training and even a walk on the castle walls. We even saw 2 fierce looking dragons who live in the castle.
The children maintained great HoWLs while at the castle and as we walked through the streets on Lincoln to get back on the coach. Great work KS1! We hope you all had a great day because we certainly did!
Please watch our video to find out everything we got up to today!

Establishing Crew
Crew Mcloughlin really delved into ‘what is crew?’ last week. The children came up with their own definition and discussed their expectations of what they would want their crew to be like in order to adopt good habits and be the best versions of themselves. We spoke about Year 6 expectations and we just know this year is going to be a good one!
Throughout the week we have also been answering our Crew guiding question ‘How can Crew be strengthened through acts of service?’ We unpacked this question and discussed acts of service further – giving but not expecting to receive. As a Crew we decided to create postcards and bake in order to spread happiness around Carcroft. I was quite impressed with our beautiful work but even more so to see some children used their initiative and further carry this on throughout the week – giving cake and compliments to staff members and pupils. How lovely!
We participated in Challenge Crew on Tuesday where Mrs Rhodes (the queen of Challenge Crew) wrote a shopping list – It was the team leaders job to read the list and try to remember the five items, then go back to their teammates and verbally pass this down the line. The winning team was the first person at the back of the line to recite the shopping list exactly. We had lots of fun! When debriefing we realised we had used team working, listening and communication skills and critiqued how we performed at these specific skills.
As a morning task we also thoroughly enjoyed reading First News – we found lots of articles that linked to expedition and reading newspapers reminded us of our grandads.
This year we have the great opportunity of Y11 pen pals and got to meet them on hangout! We introduced ourselves and asked them lots of questions. We cannot wait to write to them further into the year, watch this space!
Overall, a very productive and successful week focusing on establishing Crew!
Hundreds, tens and ones in MI
Today we started to recap and consolidate our learning on hundreds, tens and ones. We used the base ten to make and explore numbers. Lots of us challenged ourselves further today, having a go at reasoning and problem solving questions.
Book talk continues in MI
Today we recapped the story so far by thinking about what the characters may be saying to each other and their thoughts. We worked in mini crews to think of our own ideas then shared these with the whole crew.
From here we unpicked the vocabulary that would appear in the text before text marking it when reading. We used an echo read, partner read then an independent read. We tried to think about the fluency of our reading today. Our reasons to read allowed us to show our understanding of the text which we all did really well. Our exit ticket allowed to order the events in the story. A great reading lesson in MI 🙂
Caring crew in MI
Today we thought about what makes our crew special. We thought about our crew norms and the non-negotiables we expect to see every day. We then moved onto creating a collage of all our crew members, we drew our selves then added 3 things we like. This is now displayed in our classroom for all to see. Our debrief allowed us to reflect on why our crew is special and the things we need to do together to make our crew the best it can be. Well done Crew MI 🙂
Blasting into immersion week
This week we have engaged with a range of tasks in order to guess the title and guiding question for the expedition. We have been scientists by exploring our solar system, naming and ordering planets, learning all about forces and to top it off going in the wonder dome, which deepened our understanding. We also painted some beautiful art work of the Sun, Earth and Moon. We researched the artist Andy Warhol, which inspired us to create images with similar techniques and relate to outer space. We used a variety of skills and tools in order to produce these including the use of varying brush strokes, dabbing of a sponge and flicking of a toothbrush to create different elements of our image.
LKS2 – Family Learning
It was lovely to have so many parents join us this afternoon for our family learning and to be able to meet the grown ups of our crews. Thank you to all the grown ups for getting involved with the gas mask making, making fighter jets and identification labels. There were some great fighter jet designs.
Immersion
Today we took the opportunity to immerse ourselves in our expedition. Children came dressed up as evacuees which was lovely to see. The minute the sirens went off, we had to quickly build an Anderson Shelter to protect themselves from the bombs being dropped by the Germans.
Once we realised it was no longer safe, it was time to pack our suitcase and head off to the countryside.
The suitcases were packed and we then boarded the train so we could leave London and move to the countryside where we’ll be safe.
