Crew MI visits the kitchen

As part of our DT case study, we went to visit the kitchen to learn about food hygiene. It was very formative and we didn’t even have to wash up.

Experiment time in MI!

Today we carried out a mini experiment as part of our DT lesson. The experiment allowed us to think about hand cleanliness and why food hygiene is so important. We brushed bread over different surfaces and then placed the bread in food bags. We then predicted what will happen to the bread in each bag over the next couple of weeks.

MI start case study 3- Design and Technology

Today we started our Design and Technology case study! We thought a lot about food hygiene and what cross contamination is. We thought about how we can prevent cross contamination when preparing food, cooking and serving food. We then looked at different types of bacteria and completed a mini quiz to assess our understanding. From here we thought about our fridges at home and what they do. We thought about which foods go where in the fridge and why. We are all looking forward to visiting the school kitchen and allowing the ladies in there to show us how they prepare food safely, how they prepare our school meals and what the fridge looks like in there.

MI’s very own press conference!

Today we took part in an experience day as part of our writing unit. This was to support the newspaper articles we are writing. We read a chapter of our text then watched a video clip to give us some ideas on what a press conference looks like. We then got into role of the characters from the story and explored questions that these characters would get asked. Finally, we put all our hard work into our very own press conference! Children did so well getting into role, thinking about responses the characters would say along with thinking about their body language and facial expressions.

Translating in maths…

We learnt something brand new in maths this week… translation! On the peg boards, we plotted points and then translated them to new points. When we were feeling more confident, we created shapes and worked with each other to move them and describe the translations.

UKS2 trip – Thackray Museum of Medicine

Good evening, just a reminder regarding our trip on 29th June. See below letter sent out 23rd May.

Dear parents and carers,

As part of our Summer Term expedition, ‘How does a healthy lifestyle impact your body and mind?’, we have organised a fantastic visit to The Thackray Museum of Medicine to hook the children into their learning and bring the expedition to life. The visit will be an action-packed day where the children will have the opportunity to explore how medicine has changed over time and observe some minor medical procedures.

The trip will take place on Wednesday 29th June 2022. The coach will collect us from school at 9:15am and it will return at approximately 2:30pm depending on the traffic. We will update you via text message if our return is delayed.

Children will wear school uniforms for the visit and we strongly encourage them to wear their red Carcroft hoodies.

Those children entitled to a free school meal will be provided with a packed lunch from school. All other children will be required to bring one from home.

The cost of the trip is £16.60. We are asking parents to pay £12.00 per child and the school will subsidise the remainder of the cost. Unfortunately, if we don’t receive enough money the trip will not go ahead.

Please note: All monies and consents need to be completed and paid via Parentpay no later than Friday 17th June 2022

We are looking forward to an exciting day. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries.

Yours faithfully,

Upper Key Stage Two Crew

More Science in MI…

Today MI investigated osmosis! We put a few drops of food colouring into water and watched how a paper towel absorbed it. This showed us how nutrients are absorbed through villi in the small intestine into our bloodstream. We linked this back to our previous learning and then to the guiding question.

Newspaper planning in MI

Today we started planning our newspaper reports. We thought about a catchy headline and tried to use alliteration. We thought about the 5 W’s creating our introduction. When then chotted down ideas for PP1 and PP2. Great work by all this morning 🙂

Science in MI

This week in our expedition lessons we took part in a science experiment that linked to the work we have done around the heart. We took part in some physical activity and recorded our heart rate after different amounts of exercise. We then analysed our results and discussed the effect of exercise on the heart and our daily lives.
