After a good nights sleep and a hearty breakfast we had our first challenge of the day – this is one the children were looking forward to and it did not disappoint. Needless to say we were cold and wet but we had big smiles on our faces!
Crew Hamill began their new maths unit yesterday, focusing on telling the time! To get us started, we did some practical work looking at o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We began by discussing what an analogue clock is and where we might see them in every day life. We then looked at the different hands and what each of them represented. Following this, we used our individual clocks to show different times. We began with o’clock times, understanding that the minute hand will always be on the 12. Then we looked at half past, with the minute hand being on the 6, half way around the clock. To end the lesson, we pushed ourselves to look at quarter past and quarter to.
For Tranquil Tuesday we began the day with some space yoga!
After checking into our rooms with great excitement we had our first activity – cratestack! The children thoroughly enjoyed it and we were super proud of them for going out of their comfort zones and all rose to the challenge!
Today we explored persuasive openers, we found them in a series of sentences, built them together with the whole crew and in mini crews then worked on creating some sentences independently. We will then apply these to our persuasive letters when we start writing 🙂
Today we were introduced to our new text, “so you think you’ve got it bad? A kids guide to life in Ancient Egypt.” First of all we took part in a silent conversation where we explored the front cover of the text. We then moved onto the blurb, reading it with our partner and discussing our ideas. We then moved onto looking at the features of non fiction, playing some fastest finger first games and voicing the sections we would like to read about based on the contents page. We then used read around the robin to explore the glossary and discussed some of the language with our mini crew and whole crew. We then took part in a partner 1 and partner 2 read where we read the first section of the text. We gave our partner critique after reading for a minute then swapped our role. We then took part in an independent read before listening to Mrs McClare read the text back to us. We explored our reasons to read, using the text to find the answers and adding our own opinions and thoughts. Our exit ticket looked at true and false statements which consolidated our learning.
Our do now activity today allowed us to recap and consolidate our learning on line graphs 🙂 We then moved onto our position and direction maths unit where we explored coordinates. We looked at the different axis and the direction we move in in order to find and plot coordinates. We really enjoyed our lesson today 🙂
Today we began our lesson by thinking about the school day. In pairs we ordered the events that happen in a typical school day such as reading, writing and maths. The children then added in important things like bagels and story time that Mrs Robson had forgotten about!
Afterwards we thought more carefully about the purpose of crew and what happens during our crew sessions as this will be the first section of our report.
In PE, we started our new unit fitness. Our aim was to understand how balance helps us in everyday life. To warm up, we played snakes and tunnels. When I shouted “snakes” we wiggled the ropes low to the ground. The children had to jump over the ropes. When I shouted “tunnels” we lifted the ropes up high. Children had to duck underneath the ropes. We then moved onto skills development and looked at balance in everyday life. In groups of 3, we had to complete an activity for 2 minutes and then swap over. The activities were skipping, lifting a hoop above our heads and then back to the floor, and stand on 1 foot whilst balancing a beanbag on our heads. We then looked at better balancing, and completed a range of activities. The first activity was standing in a line and standing on one foot. We passed the beanbag down the line and then hopped to join the end. We then had to reach the other side by lifting the hoop over their teammates head and placing it infront of them. They then had to jump back into the hoop. As part of the plenary, we discussed how we use balance in everyday life.
In maths, we have moved on to our new topic shape. We started off by looking at angles and turns. We practiced quarter turns, half turns, three quarter turns and full turns. We then practiced going clockwise and anti-clockwise. We then worked in pairs to practice turns.
