WW2 workshop in MI

Time Travel education came into school today and delivered a WW2 workshop that introduced many concepts of WW2. The experience brought events of WW2 to life and children were able to handle a range of objects which we all loved. Children learnt about the causes of WW2, the homefront, The Blitz, kit, equipment and weapons, rationing and evacuees. We really enjoyed becoming shopkeepers where we learnt some of the foods that were rationed! We were shocked by some of our weekly allowances. This experience really helped to kick start our expedition and build on some of the concepts we have already started to explore in class together.

xp outdoors

Crew Hamill was amazing today in xp outdoors. We did a bit of bug hunting where we found loads of amazing creatures and then we climbed some trees before ending our session with playing a game of 123 where are you?

Being an evacuee for the day…

In Crew MI, we came to school dressed up as evacuees and participated in a range of exciting activities. First, we learnt about the blitz. We watched clips and listened to sound effects to imagine what it was like during this awful time. We even had a go at working in mini crews to create our own Anderson Shelters. Next, we learnt what evacuation was and why some children were evacuated to the safety of the countryside. We then became evacuees ourselves and packed our suitcases with what we thought we needed, decorated our train ticket and then got on the train waving goodbye to our families. Overall, we had a great day and learnt so many more interesting facts about life in WW2.

Rainbow fish

Last week we looked at how to be kind, we did this through the rainbow fish book. We looked at how rainbow fish wasn’t kind to begin with but then ended up being kind in the end and this made him feel happy. We created our own kindness fish tank to remind us to always be kind. We looked at ordering the story and verbally answering questions about what we had read.

Grammar

This week in Crew Marsh we have gone right back to basics and unpicked what a letter, word and sentence is. The children were fab at comparing these and understanding how letters make words and words make sentences.

Reasons to read

During our book talk lesson, we have worked together to answer a range of questions. We focused on the importance of using the text to support us to answer the question. Some of our questions asked for evidence from the text and this was an area we will continue to develop as we more through this year. It was great to see the children working collaboratively and working to each other’s strengths.

KS1 Fieldwork to Lincoln Castle

KS1 were hooked into their new expedition today with an amazing trip to Lincoln Castle.

We took part in 3 different workshops including shield making, knight training and even a walk on the castle walls. We even saw 2 fierce looking dragons who live in the castle.

The children maintained great HoWLs while at the castle and as we walked through the streets on Lincoln to get back on the coach. Great work KS1! We hope you all had a great day because we certainly did!

Book talk continues in MI

Today we recapped the story so far by thinking about what the characters may be saying to each other and their thoughts. We worked in mini crews to think of our own ideas then shared these with the whole crew.

From here we unpicked the vocabulary that would appear in the text before text marking it when reading. We used an echo read, partner read then an independent read. We tried to think about the fluency of our reading today. Our reasons to read allowed us to show our understanding of the text which we all did really well. Our exit ticket allowed to order the events in the story. A great reading lesson in MI 🙂

Blasting into immersion week

This week we have engaged with a range of tasks in order to guess the title and guiding question for the expedition. We have been scientists by exploring our solar system, naming and ordering planets, learning all about forces and to top it off going in the wonder dome, which deepened our understanding. We also painted some beautiful art work of the Sun, Earth and Moon. We researched the artist Andy Warhol, which inspired us to create images with similar techniques and relate to outer space. We used a variety of skills and tools in order to produce these including the use of varying brush strokes, dabbing of a sponge and flicking of a toothbrush to create different elements of our image.
