How many people in Doncaster?

We continued with our expedition where we looked at a topography maps and what they can show. We learned that Doncaster is between approximately 8-24m above sea level whereas the Peak district is around 400m above sea level.

We estimated the population of the world. Most of us estimated around 7-8 billion.

Next we considered the estimation of London based on the size and population of the other capital cities but unfortunately we were nowhere near for this one. We could imagine there were over 7million people in London.

We looked at different areas around the UK and the population of these areas. To help with our estimation for Doncaster we looked at areas similar in size to this area so we could make realistic estimations. Some great estimations.

Finally, we looked at a range of photos from the past and present of Doncaster. It was interesting to see how much Doncaster has changed over time. There has certainly been an increase in the amount of human features in our local area over the years.

Timetables

Last week, we got our focus solely on our timetables and ensure we are secure with all of them. This year we’ll have the MTC so it’s important that we’re ready for it.

The children volunteered to lead chanting the timetables. We talked about the importance of saying the full number sentence rather than just the answers.

Measurement Madness 📏

Today, Crew Hamill completed a practical maths lesson that involved measuring in centimetres and millimetres. We had to be VERY accurate with our measuring skills to make sure we got the exact measurements of things (e.g. a glue stick is 11cm 4mm long!) we then had to go around the room, measuring as many object as we could, sorting them into a table based on their measurements!

Magic Mathematicians 🪄✨✍️🎨

Today, in Magic Maths, we discussed lines of symmetry on different 2D shapes and how many times we could ‘cut’ them so each side had the same amount. We talked about this meaning they had a line of symmetry- where it is the same on both sides. We then practiced using lines of symmetry to complete the different pictures, trying to make sure that each picture was completed.

Lost in the Arctic! ❄️🐻‍❄️

Oh no! We were exploring the Arctic with our friends when all of a sudden we realised we were lost! An adult had a map on their phone but they forgot the passcode. We had to solve to clues to work out the passcode to the phone to help us work out the way home. We had to use a variety of different maths skills to work out the clues. We really enjoyed doing this escape room and look forward to doing another one.

Some recent maths learning that has been taking place in Crew MW.

Sorting shapes – circle or triangle? We discussed what makes a circle a circle and what makes a triangle a triangle. We then used these descriptions to decide whether the shapes needed to go in the circle group or the triangle group. We then investigated items around the classroom and found examples of circles and triangles.

Finding 1 less – how do we know? We talked about finding 1 less and how this meant we would end up with a smaller amount. We created towers of 5 blocks and removed blocks 1 at a time to find 1 less than our starting number. We then checked how many were left by counting them. We got really confident as predicting what we thought 1 less than our starting number would be!

Composing 4 and 5 – how can we make different numbers? We looked at how numbers can help us make other numbers. We investigated different ways we could make the number 4 and the number 5 by putting small world pieces into 2 baskets and seeing how many were in each basket (parts) and then seeing how many we had altogether (whole). We worked really well together to talk about how we could move the pieces between the baskets, how many we had in each and then predicted our whole before using our counting skills to check our answer. We then really challenged ourselves and added a third basket!
