In Expedition this afternoon, we discovered the 4 types of Roman houses. We found out they were roundhouse/huts, villas, insulea and Domus. Then, we looked at what each house was made out of. It ranged from mud and straw to marble and mosaic tiles. We discussed where we might find these types of houses and why some were used in the cities and others in the countryside.
Children explored the uniform that Roman soldier were expected to wear on a daily basis. To ensure we’d been paying attention we had a quick test at the end of the lesson to see if we could label an outline of a soldier.
In case study 2, we are now starting to look at an another hero A NURSE!
Yesterday, we got to meet Nurse Welburn, we learnt all about where nurses work and what jobs they do when they are there. We even got to dress up as a nurse!
Today we were very lucky to have a visit from Nurse Welburn who is a children’s nurse in a hospital. She brought lots of equipment for us to look at and even showed us how to use it. The children asked her lots of questions and talked about their own experiences of visiting the hospital. We then did a carousel of activities including dressing up and colouring. Thank you to Nurse Welburn for coming to see us all.
In our expedition lessons this week, we have found out lots of information about Roman towns. We focussed on six Roman towns in England: Londinium, Eboracum, Viriconium, Isca Augusta, Deva, Aquae Sulius. We used a map to help us locate where the Romans settled in the United Kingdom and then identified the main uses for these towns.
To help us with our plot point in writing, Crew Hamill became Roman Soldiers for the morning. We went outside and took part in all the activities Roman soldiers have to do when they first join the army. Their basic training last for a whole four months – we were tired after just doing it for half an hour! We did a route march, some weapon training, battle drills and a keep fit class.
Y2 have been gathering historical information this week about the Great Fire of London, we discovered the fire started in Pudding Lane in 1666. There was no fire brigade in London so Londoners had to fight the fire with the help of the soldiers. They used buckets of water and fire hooks. We looked at how this differed today, how our firefighters could have helped with the equipment in the present day. To test our knowledge about fire fighters in the present day we took part in our first Kahoot quiz, it was a tough one!
