This afternoon, Crew Ramsay have been continuing using charcoal as a medium for art. Today, they were drawing a Tudor house using a marking making, blending, lines and shapes. We spent some time looking at the shapes used to help us structure our own drawing. We discussed the shapes and how to put these together to draw a Tudor house. Once we had finished, children conducted a gallery walk and started to think of the class praises and wonders.
Today in expedition we have been artists. We have worked really hard to use charcoal effectively to create our own sketch of Carcroft School. We had a practice of using different skills and techniques before applying this knowledge to our learning. Miss Holdsworth was really impressed that we remembered some of our key words when praising each others work, such as blending and outline. We were so proud of the beautiful work we produced, we showcased this by completing a gallery walk.
We have started our work on our final product by looking at self-portraits. We have looked at the features of our faces and the lines and shapes we could use to create these. We took each part step-by-step and used mirrors to create our self-portraits. We cannot wait to see our final product!
As part of our hook into our new expedition, the children had the opportunity to design and create their own Roman coins out of clay. They carefully considered the symbols and designs used by the Romans and thought about what might be important to feature on their own coins.
To continue Hook Week, we focused on the artist Frank Bowling and took part in a gallery walk in which we looked at examples of his work to critique. Following this, we began looking at his medium of choice – oil pastels – and investigated how we can use these with different techniques to produce different effects.
This week, Year 5 have begun their DT slice in order to learn about healthy, balanced diets, seasonality and how to prepare a savoury meal. They began by looking at example menus and deciding in mini crews whether or not they were healthy, balanced meals. We then ranked the menus in order from most to least healthy. Following this, each person created their own healthy meal, ensuring it had the correct amount of carbohydrates, vegetables, fats etc.
Once we had done this, we then moved on to look at seasonality and we found out where different ingredients are sourced from when it is not the correct time of year in the UK to grow things. We then used our knowledge of this to find seasonal meals for July that we would be able to make. We then used iPads to have a look on Asda’s website to create a list of ingredients and a price list, so Miss knew what ingredients to buy and how much money she would need. Finally, we put our DT skills to the test: chopping, mixing, stirring, boiling and grating. We cannot wait to see how our vegetable crustless quiche turns out!
This week in phonics we focused on letter formation and blending. The children were very engaged in our phonics learning while using cars and paint to form the letters. The children also used cars to consolidate their understanding around blending, whilst avoiding a parking ticket…
UKS2 were very proud to present their learning to their adults yesterday afternoon. After giving an introduction explaining all about our expedition titled: At The Coalface, the children explained what we had done during our case studies to answer our guiding question: How has the mining industry shaped communities?
Children then got to share their amazing final product – a lapbook that brought all of their hard work from this term together whilst showing off their fantastic artwork. Adults were able to take part in a gallery walk to view their child’s work and were also able to take part in other activites – looking through expedition books, taking part in a Kahoot quiz to test their mining knowledge and an opportunity to create some charcoal art of their own!
Thank you so much to everyone who attended and made it a lovely afternoon!
This week in our crew’s cooking class we made our own pizza. The children got to choose from a range of toppings, or all of them, to add to their pizza. We used our cutting skills from previous weeks to chop the peppers, tomatoes and mushrooms. They smelt delicious!
This week, Crew Hamill have made a start on Case Study 3 – Art. In our first lesson, we have explored our focus artist of Henry Moore who is famous for being commissioned to produce charcoal drawings of coal miners. We then had a go at experimenting with the medium of charcoal ourselves using different techniques, seeing what effects we could create. Some of us even attempted to draw with it!
