Although the sun wasnβt shining, yellow team oozed with warmth! Myself and Miss Burge were so proud of our team! From the youngest members who had not completed a sports day of this length to the oldest members who supported and encouraged them! We really did showcase the meaning of Crew!
Scotty’s – Fire Building
We extended our fire building skills in Scotty’s this week by building a safety wall to protect our fires from the wind. We then had another go at keeping our fires burning. One group were extremely successful in building theirs and even created some smoke! Well done to Zach who earned our Scotty’s Hero for his excellent recall of what a fire needs to survive!
Scotty’s – Fire Building
Crew Hamill had so much fun at Scotty’s yesterday! We were taught all about the triangle of requirements for a successful fire heat, oxygen and fuel. He then showed us how to build our own fire pit and how to use a cotton wool ball and a flint to generate a fire. We all got to have a go using the flint which we found exciting! Although a few of us managed to generate a spark, we weren’t as successful as the leader at getting the fire started – he did it first time, every time! We then used the skills he taught us to add sticks to the flame to begin building the fire. We didn’t manage to keep the fire going for long but we’re hoping to extend our skills next week to see if we can keep it going for longer and build it even bigger.
Scotty’s Heroes
Today, Crew Hamill learned how to take part in a patrol. We discussed that this was about walking together, with a shared mission, but keeping far enough apart to protect others in our patrol team and ensure we weren’t being followed. We then had to patrol through our outdoor area and hunt for objects that had been hidden around. This meant we had to use our observational skills and really concentrate on the patrol we were taking as some of them were extremely tricky to spot! A big shout out to Taylor for earning Scotty’s Hero for this week!
Giant’s Keys – Crew Building
In crew, we played a game called ‘Giant’s Keys’. The ‘giant’ was sat on a chair in the middle of the circle, with their keys underneath. One person in the circle had to quietly steal the keys. Once they had successfully been stolen, we all put our arms behind our backs before the giant tried to guess who had stolen their keys!
Crew Challenge!
In our crew challenge this morning, we worked together to pass an object around without waking up the sleeping dragon! We worked really well to pass around the bells and the tambourine without making a sound…and we succeeded! Well done Crew MW!
Caring crew in MI
Today we explored illegal and harmful substances and what effects these can have. We watched a clip to further develop our knowledge then took part in a short quiz. We then created a class anchor chart to show our findings from the session.
Mindful Eating
In crew this week we have being looking at mental health. Today the children looked at food and had to take the time to appreciate each bite. They had some fruit and had to think about how it looked, taste, feel, hear, see an smell. so we used our senses to find these out
Citizenship Crew
Today, in Citizenship Crew, we continued our learning on ‘Aiming High’. Following our last few sessions which have focused on our achievements and goals, we looked at what it means to be “always learning” and why this is so important. We discussed the importance of having a positive learning attitude and the difference between a growth mindset (in which we have a ‘can do’ attitude) and a fixed mindset (in which we have a ‘can’t do’ attitude). We then had to practise being positive learners by taking part in two challenges. The first challenge was to draw a house shape with a cross through it. This seemed easy enough to begin with but then we were told we weren’t allowed to take our pen off our whiteboards and we weren’t allowed to go over the same line twice! This definitely tested some of our positive attitudes and a few of us felt like giving up. However, we powered through and worked out there are actually a few different ways to do this successfully. This helped us to understand that not everyone does things the same way but that this can still lead to the same, successful outcome. Our second challenge involved using tangram pieces. All we were told to do was to use the shapes to ‘make a fish’. At first, we had no idea what to do and lots of us realised we were in a fixed mindset and almost gave up. However, after a few clues, we were able to do this successfully too!
Mental Health Week continues in MI
In crew today we reflected on the piece of work we started yesterday before recapping bullying, what bullying is and how bullying can affect our mental health causing negative feelings. We linked our discussions back to our session last week and to our expert session. We then discussed that different feelings are experienced in different parts of our bodies. We looked at a variety of different feelings including being angry, shy, proud, confident, bored and happy then thought about which parts of our body tell us when we have these feelings. We discussed when we get sweaty hands or shaking hands, butterflies in our tummy, our heart beating quickly, seeing red and also feeling tearful. We shared times we have felt these different things. We then moved onto thinking about why? We discussed that when we experience uncomfortable feelings, it is our body’s way of saying that we need to change the situation. We discussed the different things we may do. Some of these included sharing our feelings with a trusted friend or adult, writing down how we feel, drawing an image or doodling to show our feelings or doing something positive like walking. From here we moved onto body image where we discussed that our feelings can be affected when we feel like we need to look a certain way, wear certain clothes and have our hair a certain way. We discussed that this can cause us to have low self esteem as we donβt feel good enough. We also discussed how the media can have a massive impact on this too.
We then continued to work on some of the work for our final product π We are really enjoying our crew sessions π
