What a day!! Murton Park – Roman Day

We really hope the children have enjoyed their day as much as we have.

Today was action packed from start to finish and definitely gave the children the opportunity to experience life as a Roman soldier.

On our way to the fort, we needed some ‘donkeys’ to pull the cart. It was surprising how many volunteered for the task.

Before starting the activities, it was essential that they looked the part so they were allocated their barracks and a uniform.

The rest of the day consisted of 5 activities.

Sword and shield fighting where children were taught how to hold their shield and spear/sword. They were expected to follow orders to ensure their survival in battle.

They had the opportunity to throw javelins and fight with a bag. Some children were able to command their recruits.

It was music to our ears that the children weren’t escaping writing today but with a difference. They were using the Roman alphabet abd the Roman style of writing which didn’t include finger spaces or punctuation!

Crafting Roman oil lamps was another of our tasks. Children used clay to create an oil lamp which they were able to design.

Once the children had learned the skills they were taken to battle. Unexpectedly, there was a celt who challenged them to a battle because she didn’t want them on her land, however, the Roman soldier defeated them and they ran away.

An absolutely amazing day had by all and we’ve no doubts the children are ready to commence our expedition next week and learn more about the Romans.

Marvellous mosaics

Yesterday as part of hook week, we made mosaics. Mosaics are made of glass, stone and rock and during the Roman times they showed a sign of wealth and importance. Crew Thompson really enjoyed making shield and sword designs and tried really hard to replicate a mosaic. ☺️

Fieldwork – Murton Park

Good morning

Tomorrow will be an exciting day as we will be heading to Murton Park for our Roman day.

If your child is entitled to free school meals they will have a pack lunch provided, however, I feel they will need to bring an additional drink as it’s expected to be another very warm day.

Children who don’t receive free school meals will need to bring a packed lunch along with a drink.

Some of the activities tomorrow will take place outside so please can you put suncream on your child and send them with a hat. Please ensure children are in their school uniform.

We will be leaving the venue at approx 3pm so we expect to be back at school for approximately 4.15pm. The office will send a message if we get caught in traffic.

Thank you
LKS2 Crew.

Knucklebones!

As part of hook week, this afternoon we made some knucklebones. We moulded clay into small pieces and shaped them to resemble knucklebones. Then, we came up with some rules on how to play knucklebones. We are super excited to play the knucklebone game tomorrow!

Roman soldiers handbook 📖

This morning in our reading lesson, we started looking at a new book. First, we completed a jigsaw of the front cover and picked out the title and author. We then discussed the audience, purpose and text type of the book. I was blown away with the children’s knowledge about how we know if a book is non-fiction! We can’t wait to start reading this book and learn lots of facts about what it takes to become a Roman soldier!

Maths!

Today we started our place value unit with a practical maths lesson. We used base 10 to represent numbers to 100. It was great to see how much the children knew about tens and ones!

Perfect, pictorial printing!

Today we completed our art project, printing! Over the last 3 days we have carefully designed our print, crafted the template and then printed it onto card. First we had to think about the design, something to represent us and our hobbies. We then meticulously added the string to our template, making sure we followed our design and had the string in the right places. Finally, we then painted the string on the design and printed it onto card. The results are fantastic and really show how hard Crew Thompson worked and concentrated. Well done! 🎉

Crew Thompson – First week back! 🎉

What a first 3 days back! This week we have been working towards answering our guiding question: What does crew mean to me? As a crew we have focussed on developing our communication skills and our ability to work as a team. We have done lots of different activities such as jigsaw puzzles, communication games and baking!

We created a crew bunting from leaves we found in the forrest. We worked together to collect lots of leaves and even managed to find some huge ones!

What a fantastic first week back in Year 3!
