Phonics 📚

We have been working extremely hard on our phonics since the start of the year, and so that we are practising as much as we can, we have been using the iPads as additional tuition during our provision time. We have really enjoyed learning with Fred and letting him hear how good we are getting at recognising sounds and getting speedier. Some of us even used the whiteboards on the table to practise our letter formation! We know that the more we practise, the better we will become!

Delivering baked goodies to Grandma 👵 🍰 🧁

Today we created our own baskets to take to Grandma some treats 🍰🧁 We loved making our baskets and discussing the traditional tale – Little Red Riding Hood. We kept our eyes out for the mischievous wolf 🐺 We thought about how Little Red Riding Hood moved through the forest and how her facial expressions changed when she spotted the wolf 🐺 We all looked after our buns and didn’t eat them until the end!

Star Reader Breakfast 🌟📚🥐🧃

What a lovely start to the day! This morning I had the pleasure of having my breakfast with the Carcroft Star Readers. It was lovely listening to the children share why they had been chosen as their Crews Star Reader and I could sense just how proud they all were 👏 I also got the opportunity to listen to the children talk about how they celebrated Roald Dahl day in their crews yesterday, it sounded like they had lots of fun! Especially in Crew MI where they got to watch people eating worms 🪱 I’m guessing it was The Twits ‘Wormy spaghetti’ or as Mrs Twit calls it ‘Squiggly Spaghetti’! 🤣 Well done Star Readers! 👏

Roald Dahl Day 2023! 🎈🎉📚📝

What a ‘PHIZZ WHIZZING’ 🌟 day it was across UKS2 this morning! Today I had the pleasure of sharing my love of Roald Dahl books with Crew McLoughlin, Crew MI and Crew Boswell. In Crew McLoughlin we looked at some of my favourite Roald Dahl books including Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The BFG. The children also shared some of their favourite books. We then looked at some information about Roald Dahl including his personal life, work life and great achievements. Our most interesting finding was that he was a spy at the age of 25, during WW2! The children then created some information leaflets so that they could share their knowledge about Roald Dahl with others. In Crew MI, we started by learning who Roald Dahl was, what he was famous for and why we celebrate him on this specific date (his birthday! 🎈) We then collaboratively, through echo and chorus reading, read an extract from the BFG. The children then used this to draw what they thought the BFG looked like based on the description that Roald Dahl had written. The children’s drawings were ‘SPLENDIFEROUS’! In Crew Boswell, we started by reading some interesting facts about Roald Dahl including his early life, his school life, his role during WW2, his children, the books he wrote and how he spent his later life. We couldn’t believe how many books he had written (49!) and how many had been translated into over 50 different languages so that they can be enjoyed worldwide! We also enjoyed looking at ‘GOBBLEFUNK’ (words invented by Roald Dahl!). The children finished the session by making posters all about Roald Dahl. After a busy morning and lots of hard work we were all definitely ready for ‘SCRUMDIDDLYUMPTIOUS’! 😋🍽

Learning to blend in Crew MW’s phonics

We’ve been working really hard on our learning to blend steps in phonics this week. We’ve been listening to Fred’s Fred talk, blending the sounds into words and then using our magnetic letters to make the words. Once we’ve made them, we’ve used our ‘Fred talk, read the word’ to sound out and read the words back! We’re all going to be super blenders in no time!

Celebrating Roald Dahl

Such a lovely morning celebrating Roald Dahl today. We shared our favourite Roald Dahl book with the rest of the crew giving reasons for our choices. We then watched a video clip on Roald Dahl and shared all the facts we had learnt. Mrs McClare then read some of The Twits, her favourite Roald Dahl story! There were so many laughs and giggles whilst we read the story. After reading a couple of chapters we watched a re-enactment of one scene from the story! Children really were laughing a lot!!! I think the pictures say it all!!
