Happy Birthday Roald Dahl 🥳

Today, we celebrated Roald Dahl. An author we’ll all be familiar with and no doubt spent time reading his wonderful books.

I shared an extract of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which is my favourite Roald Dahl book. We learned about his life and discovered that he invented a medical device which he gave to the NHS for free. A device still used to help lots of people.

Children were then able to choose an activity related to Roald Dahl. They could do some mindful colouring of quotes by Roald Dahl, acrostic poems, design a new front cover for their favourite book or design a sweet as if they were Willy Wonka.

Celebrating Roald Dahl

Such a lovely morning celebrating Roald Dahl today. We shared our favourite Roald Dahl book with the rest of the crew giving reasons for our choices. We then watched a video clip on Roald Dahl and shared all the facts we had learnt. Mrs McClare then read some of The Twits, her favourite Roald Dahl story! There were so many laughs and giggles whilst we read the story. After reading a couple of chapters we watched a re-enactment of one scene from the story! Children really were laughing a lot!!! I think the pictures say it all!!

What was it like during The Great Fire of London? 🔥

Today in our experience lesson we thought about chaotic the streets would have been during The Great Fire of London. We had to dodge the horses and carts and even jump over the poo 💩

We then had a go at up-levelling some basic sentences to include some year 2 features. I can’t wait to see your writing tomorrow Crew Robson 🥰

Experience lesson in MI

For our Writing Experience Lesson we went into the forest area where we shared our new text. This helped with visualising what the rainforest may be like instead of being in the classroom. We explored and unpicked the front cover and blurb, making predictions before we started reading. We looked at the pictures throughout the book and how they related to the story. We used our senses throughout our discussions, this will support us when writing in a few days. When back in the classroom we started some chotting around the 5 senses. Children then added to our classroom display using our chotting and from reading the text. This helped us to visualise what a rainforest may be like.

BBK/Chotting

In writing, we have been using our reading text to help us build background knowledge and start chotting some ideas to support our writing. Each group had a small amount of text to read and then they had to summarise for the rest of the crew. We have discovered that summarising is a skill that we will need to develop during our time in year 4.
