This morning in our Scottys session, we had to use our listening skills and our communications skills to navigate our way around the obstacle course. We had to make sure we were giving clear instructions so that the listener knew exactly what to do. However, we also had to make sure we were listening carefully so we were doing to correct thing. Teamwork was essential in todays Scottys session in order to be successful.
Citizenship crew in Crew Thompson
This morning we looked at what it meant to be “fit as a fiddle”. We investigated what it meant to be physically and mentally healthy where we were able to use our knowledge from Mindful Monday crew. We then looked at how we can keep our head, heart and muscles healthy. We came up with some great ideas for example, exercise for 30 minutes a day, eat your 5 a day, drink plenty of water, get lots of sleep and play with our friends. 🍎💧🏃🏻♂️ We then sorted out the different things into the correct box.
Book Talk 📚🗣
In our book talk lessons this week, we have been reading “The Last Bear” by Hannah Gold. We have read the pages of the book and text marked all the important information and unpicked the vocabulary we wasn’t sure of. Crew Thompson are really improving when using the skill reading around the word to unpick the meaning. For example, “skywards” was a word we didn’t understand but when we read around the word and it told us he looked skywards we were able to break it down. We then made a glossary of the key words and wrote the definition.
Super scientists! 🥼🧑🔬
In expedition today, we set up our experiment. First we thought of a title for our experiment “How does temperature of water change when using different materials?”. Then, we came up with a prediction – what we thought would happen in this experiment. We had some great ideas such as “the water in the glass cup will be hotter because it will act like a blanket and keep the heat in.” We then wrote our equipment list. Finally, we set up our experiment. We can’t wait to record the results and finish writing our science report. 🥼✍️
Challenge crew 👂🔂
In challenge crew, we played a game called jump in, jump out. First, we circled up and had to follow instructions “jump in” “jump out” “jump left” and “jump right”. We noticed some of us struggled with left and right so we had to work together and communicate to achieve this. Then, we moved onto a challenge and had to do what Miss Thompson said but chant back the opposite. For example if Miss Thompson said “jump left” we jumped left but had to say “jump right”. This definitely required lots of thinking and turned our brains on this morning 🧠🤔
What impact is climate change having on the environment 🌎❄️
In expedition this afternoon, we looked at what climate change is and how it is effecting the environment and animal habitats. We discovered that climate is the weather patterns in a region for over 30 years. We then looked at how the climate has changed in Svalbard. We used our learning from the previous lesson and found out that the sea temperature and air temperature in Svalbard has increased and this is melting the ice therefore impacting polar bear habitats.
Mindful Monday🧘♀️
In crew this morning, we had a fantastic discussion about how important it is to be both mentally and physically healthy. We first looked at the benefits of being physically and mentally healthy and then had a go at some yoga 🧘
Prefix or Suffix?
In our grammar lesson this afternoon, we looked at what prefixes and suffixes are and what they do to a root word. We found out that a prefix goes at the start of a word and a suffix is added at the end of the word. We played the prefix pair game, where we matched up the correct prefix to the root word. We had lots of fun and was then able to apply this to our independent learning task.
Technology Safari 👀🔎🖥
In our computing lesson today, we went on a technology safari. The aim of this lesson was to be able recognise technology. We walked around the school looking for things that contained a battery, screen and wires. We managed to spot lots of different examples (especially in the staff room) such as computers, a printer and a microwave.
PP3 – the surge of water 💧
In writing today, we wrote PP3 which was all about the surge of water breaking through the ice dam. We picked up the pace needed in this writing lesson and used shorter sentences for the effect. We used lots of features such as expanded noun phrases, fronted adverbials and even managed to use a simile! 😀 What a fantastic writing lesson! We can’t wait to write PP4 on Monday!
