Where did the Romans come from?

During our expedition lesson, we looked at where the Romans came from. We found out that the city of Rome, in Italy, was the centre of the Roman Empire. We watched a quick clip that showed us what Ancient Rome used to be like and we made some interesting observations – there were no cars, people travelled on horseback instead and all the buildings were really detailed, decorated in red and gold. We used our ICT skills to locate Italy using Google Earth and identified where this was on a World Map.

Roman invasion

In expedition we have been learning all about the Romans. Yesterday, we focussed on finding out when the Romans invaded Britain. We sorted the timeline of events and discovered that the Romans invaded Britain in 43 AD under Emperor Claudius’s control. As a crew, we had a discussion about what AD and BC meant in relation to the dates on our timeline.

Learning about biomes in Crew MI

Today we learnt about the different biomes around the world and talked about why we thought deserts, rainforests and tundras were in those places. Next, we sorted out which animals might live in the different biomes and why. Finally we discussed the importance of having different biomes for the plants and animals to survive in.

We are geographers 🗺️

Last week was spent immersing ourselves into our new Autumn expedition. We started off the week engaging in an Amazon virtual reality experience! We were not keen on the tarantulas but loved flying above the canopy layer and delving deeper into the forest! We worked as geographers exploring the world map focusing on geographical zones of the world. We used resources to help us such as an atlas and a globe whereby we recapped continents, tropics, lines of latitude and longitude, hemispheres and time zones. Did you know we are in the Greenwich meridian? We found it really interesting exploring time zones at the opposite side of the Earth to us!

We then zoomed in on South America looking at the 12 sovereign states (countries that rule themselves). A couple of us even knew the British overseas territories that are part of South America. Next up, we learnt about human and physical features with a focus in Colombia, When exploring on Google Earth we particularly noticed Colombia had a vast range of physical features from emerald green mountains to Caribbean white sandy beaches. We have asked miss to visit Colombia on our next school trip… we can dream!

Hope you have enjoyed reading all about our geography learning,

Art attack in MI!

Today we explored human and physical geography before thinking more about physical features found in South America. Once we had a good understanding of both human and physical features we created our own art attack! We used maps to help us show all the different physical features and we were all super proud of our creation. Great howls were shown throughout the activity with a great positive attitude, great collaborative working and the end result showed beautiful work. Fab work MI 🙂

Hook week begins in MI

Today we started our geography case study where we started to explore geographical zones of the world. We explored both a globe and map of the world thinking about continents of the world and the countries that belong to each continent. We looked at the equator and what it is along with the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. We found the seas and oceans of the world and discussed the northern and southern hemisphere. Also we thought about time zones and what these are. We watched a video clip to help consolidate our learning then took part in a quiz to assess our understanding. We all discussed our green challenge question working collaboratively to support each others answers.

VR workshop for MI

Today we have enjoyed diving into the rainforest through a virtual reality workshop. We enjoyed flying over the emergent layer of the rainforest as well as coming face to face with some of the Amazonian animals including capuchin monkeys, leopards and sloths! We also started to think about the impact of deforestation and why this is happening. Tomorrow we will be reflecting on the workshop further where we will write our own recount, these will be added to our blog for everyone to read 🙂

LKS2 Celebration of Learning 🌍🎶🌊⛰🌋🏫

This afternoon marked the end of our LKS2 Expedition, ‘Earth Shattering Events’. To celebrate all of the learning that had taken place we invited parents, grandparents and other family members to join us for a special celebration in the school hall. Children sang songs, performed poems and shared interesting facts that they had learnt about earth shattering events such as, earthquakes, volcanoes and floods. The children were amazing and we were all super proud of them! 👏

Thank you so much to all of the grown ups who attended to support their child/ren, it was a great turnout! Also if you didn’t get the opportunity to buy one of our celebratory baskets that includes the book that the children created as part of their Autumn Expedition, then these will be available to purchase from Crew Thompson after school tomorrow!
