This afternoon Crew Thompson started dodgeball in PE. We focussed on developing our aim as this is a key component in a dodgeball game. We first had a hoop on the floor that we had to aim for. Then this progresses to picking the hoop up and moving it. We discussed how the throw would change depending on speed and distance. We can’t wait to keep developing our dodgeball skills and eventually play a huge game! 🏐
History Hackers
Today we have started a new book in reading called History Hackers Roman Rescue. First, we completed a jigsaw of the front cover and unpicked the title and author of the book. We then discussed the front cover and made some predictions about what the book could be about. We started to read chapter one whilst text marking the important information.
Don’t forget our to come along to our Witches and Wizards spooktacular disco on Thursday 🎃👻
Feature finding 🔎
In our writing lesson today, we have looked at different diary entries and discussed what features are included. We found that there are personal pronouns, time fronted adverbials, date, Dear Diary and it is written in past tense. We all worked incredibly hard to find these features in a Roman diary entry.
A Roman’s Daily Life!
During our experience lesson, we had the opportunity to delve further into the daily life of a Roman soldier.
Crew Hamill and Crew Thompson came together to create a larger army unit and we used our role play skills to act out the main duties of a Roman soldier – a morning parade, a smaller march in mini crews to see who could march in unison the best and we split into groups to role play the individual Roman duties such as cleaning the latrines and guard duty! Can you guess from our pictures who was in charge of cleaning the latrines?!
Football! ⚽
What a fantastic last football PE lesson we have had today. We have been able to put all our skills into practice and play some tournaments. It was great to see the children so involved with their learning and watch them try to implement their skills. We definitely have some football superstars in Crew Thompson.
Types of Roman houses
In Expedition this afternoon, we discovered the 4 types of Roman houses. We found out they were roundhouse/huts, villas, insulea and Domus. Then, we looked at what each house was made out of. It ranged from mud and straw to marble and mosaic tiles. We discussed where we might find these types of houses and why some were used in the cities and others in the countryside.
Crew Hamill and Crew Thompson – Music 🎶
This week we had a snapshot lesson – a lesson in the middle of the unit to assess how well we can apply the skills we have worked on so far to another piece of music. We began by looking at the length of phrases within the song and worked on finding a beat using body percussion (tapping knees and shoulders). We then looked at each of the words, practised saying the words first before adding the melody and thinking about the pitch of each note. Once we confident in this, we then moved on to combining all the elements and began to sing in unison trying to get the correct notes. As a challenge, we then turned the song into a call-and-response song (just like the song we are looking at during this unit – I’ve Been to Harlem). We split into 2 groups and practised where group 1 started singing the song before group 2 started singing. It worked extremely well and sounded lovely once we had mastered it!
During recorders, we were introduced to the note A. We looked at where we need to place our fingers before practising call-and-response style activities with Miss McGlone, playing different rhythms of the note A. We then took our new knowledge and played a piece called ‘Amazing Aeroplane’. Some people were even brave enough to place the piece on their own in front of the rest of their crew, with praise and wonders being given after their performance! ✨
The Roman Rampage by Charlie
Charlie has been working hard at home to create his own Roman book called “Roman Rampage”. Charlie shared this in crew this morning and we were all blown away with the information in it. Charlie had included lots of expedition knowledge about the Romans and included his own drawings to support his writing! ✏️✍️
Book talk!
This week in reading, Crew Thompson used text marking to help unpick the text. We started new pages this week so it was really important to get a good understanding of the text and what the key words meant. In our next book talk lesson, we will use our text marking to help create a class glossary of these key words. This will really help us in our demonstration lesson later on in the week.
