We are striving to get better in our times tables, we are showing that a little bit of practice each day we are able to increase our speed and accuracy.
Showing resilience in PE
Today in PE, we had some really tough team challenges to complete. Our first challenge was to order ourselves in various positions on including our birthdays, height and shoe size, without leaving the bench! Only one person was allowed to communicate which is always a tricky challenge in our crew!
We then moved onto ‘cross the river’ with the same rules applying. I was so impressed with how the children worked together, communicating silently to ensure they achieved their goal.
Challenge Crew
This week in crew we’ve had to work together to create a marble run, this was rather tricky and we had to show a great deal of resilience and determination to achieve our end goal. Leon was so proud his marble flew down his run!
Developing our estimation and tallying skills, using beans and spaghetti!
We had a great breakfast this morning, beans or spaghetti on toast. The first job was to decide which we preferred which was a tricky job! But it wasn’t that simple, we had a challenge. Our first job was to estimate how many beans/spaghetti hoops we thought were in a tin, this ranged from 57 to 450. We then counted the beans and spaghetti hoops as we ate, completing a tally to ensure we kept track of the numbers. It was hard work but our resilience shone through and we discovered that a tin held approximately 431 beans!
Can you drop an egg without breaking it?
This weeks challenge was to create a structure to keep an egg safe when it was dropped from a given height. We had to think carefully about the materials we choose to ensure our egg remained in one piece. There were some wonderful creations, children thought about several factors which would determine their success including how to slow down the speed of the fall, would the base provide enough padding and which materials would be suitable to ensure a safe fall. It was a great success and only one egg had a minor crack! We can’t wait to see what our next challenge has in store for us!
Wartime Organisation
This week we have continued to delve into our history case study, exploring WW2. We started by looking at the different organisations involved in the wartime effort. We discovered there were 4 organisations that people belonged to: the Armed Forces, the government, special operations and the home front. We explored different people within the organisations – we recorded key facts, roles and responsibilities. This was an opportunity to practice our reading within our expedition lesson.
Farming Crew Challenges
Today in PE we continued to develop our listening skills and working together as a crew to achieve our end goal. Our first challenge was ‘Sheep huddle’. We worked in pairs, the sheep was blindfolded whilst the farmer gave the instructions using positional language to herd the sheep into their pen. We had to think very carefully about our one step and two step instructions. We then finished off with our favourite challenge, Spiders Web. Great work again today, Crew Godley!
99 Club
Crew Godley have been in a very competitive mood this week and challenging themselves to get smart. We have started our 99 club in maths and trying to answer as many questions we can in a given time! Some of the children have even moved onto the 55 club already, 55 questions in 3 minutes! It’s been challenging but the crew have showed that their resilience is developing.
Magic Maths
Today in magic maths we’ve been exploring our times tables and how we can use a place value chart to support multiplying by ten. The challenge, wasn’t a challenge at all! I’m so proud of the progress Crew Godley are making with their maths!
Composing music to demonstrate events of WW2
Today we used the knowledge we have gained so far on The Blitz to begin to compose a composition of music using different instruments. We explored sound clips taken during WW2, including aircraft, the Blitz and air raid sirens. We thought about the pitch and tone, selecting instruments which best demonstrated the effects. We then looked at how we can show different beats and started to layer the different parts of our composition. We have begun to put our piece of music together, demonstrating how well we can work together as a crew to produce our final piece of music.
