KS1 Music 🎶🎼🎵

In Year 1 this week, we began our musical journey by looking at our first unit of work – The Menu Song. We warmed our bodies up by using big gestures and actions to act out baking a cake! We then listened to the song we are going to be learning during this unit. It is a cumulative song which refers back to past lines throughout resulting in verses that get longer each time. This particular song also helps us to remember the days of the week, as well as practise our sequencing skills. We began to learn the lyrics and we will continue to build up our confidence as the weeks go on.

In Year 2, we started work on our first unit – Tony Chestnut. We began by using call-and-response style 4-beat action games. This really got us thinking and we had to concentrate to make sure we were listening to and then repeating back the correct pattern. Tony Chestnut is an action song and we looked at the words to add actions to. We practised the actions in the correct order whilst trying to keep in time to the beat. We then challenged ourselves by trying to add the vocals in whilst doing the actions! It was a little tricky but with further practise over the coming weeks we will soon be ready to showcase what we have achieved!

What is a Christian and what do they believe in?

This term we have been exploring Christianity in RE. Our first job was to answer ‘Who is a Christian and what do they believe?’.

We used pictures to notice what Christian’s might believe in. Oliver said, ‘some people believe God made the world’. Leyland said, ‘Christian’s believe in angels’s, people believe they carried God the heaven. When people die they become angels’. Charlie-Jade suggested that Christian’s believe in God. We looked carefully at the pictures and unpicked why each one was important to a Christian.

Fighting Fires 🧯🔥

Y2 have been gathering historical information this week about the Great Fire of London, we discovered the fire started in Pudding Lane in 1666. There was no fire brigade in London so Londoners had to fight the fire with the help of the soldiers. They used buckets of water and fire hooks. We looked at how this differed today, how our firefighters could have helped with the equipment in the present day. To test our knowledge about fire fighters in the present day we took part in our first Kahoot quiz, it was a tough one!

The Great Fire of London 🔥🏠

After building our houses yesterday, today we recreated the Great Fire of London. We all sat and watched how quickly the fire moved from one house to the next so quickly – it only took 30 minutes to burn down all of the buildings, like the 3 days it took for the Great Fire of London. We spoke about what language we could use in our writing such as fire, smoke, spreading, roaring, burning.

How does what I do, impact others?

KS1 strengthened their crews last week by having a real focus on Crew, what does it mean to us and the wider community. Our guiding questions were, ‘How does what I do, impact others?’ and ‘Does crew stop at the school gates?’. With this in mind you’ll have noticed in our blogs last week that we delivered books and kindness stones to the local community to show kindness and care. Well…….. we were so excited to see that some of these have been found and brought joy to other children outside of our school community. The children were so excited to see this in morning crew today 😊

Working collaboratively on Pudding Lane 🚒🔥

It has been so lovely to welcome parents in to our KS1 crews this afternoon. We have worked collaboratively with our parents to create the houses on Pudding Lane, including the bakery where the infamous blaze began. Keep your eyes peeled for our next exciting experience lesson where we will use our houses to rein-act historic event.

A day in the life of a baker 👩‍🍳 🍞

In KS1 we are answering the guiding question, What will I do to be a hero in our community? To begin our expedition we are exploring firefighters 🚒 a very brave hero!

To hook us into our new writing we looked into our new book – Vlad and the Great Fire of London. We pieced together the book front cover, predicted what might happen and then became bakers for the morning, experiencing how Vlad and Boxton would have felt in the bakers shop. We baked and tasted some delicious bread 🥖

Cracking Crew

Wow! It’s been an amazing day as Crew Shields took part in a full day of Scotty’s heroes.

The children started the day off taking part in a murder mystery. They had to find clues to allow them to open the chests so they could discover the victim and the murderer. Throughout the task, children had to use their communication skills and make inferences from the information they’d been given. They learned that if they were to complete the task again that it’s about taking your time and processing the information. Well done to the second group that pretty much cracked the case.

Then they had to solve the mystery of the stolen sweets. Outside, children had to play detective to find the missing sweets. We had an evidence officer and another officer who marked the evidence found on the map. Children had to work slowly and carefully to find the evidence and report to the evidence officer. By marking it on the map, they could track the movements of the sweet thief. As with the previous task, they reflected that they needed to slow down and be methodical in their search methods. Added bonus they’ve been given the sweets to share next week. 😊

Next, children spent time in the forest where they had to get a fire going and keep it burning. Once the fire was going, they had to boil water to purify it. This required lots of team work as some children needed to find fuel for the fire while others kept it going. One team was successful and got their water boiling.

The day ended with a recon operation. Children had to observe an enemy camp and they replicate it using the same equipment. They had a certain length of time to look and go back to their own camp. Throughout the time they were given further opportunities to check the camp so they could ensure theirs was correct. 1 team did a great job of replicating the enemy camp and this was due to their great observational and communication skills. They were able to allocate certain areas to each person so they had a small area to focus on.

It’s been a great day and one I feel the children have taken a lot from. When we completed our debrief of the day, they were able to articulate that they were successful by working together. That communication, cooperation and patience were important skills for today. It was also lovely to be able to observe the children in a range of activities and get a real feel for how they work with each other.
