Experiencing building Noah’s Boat!

This week, as part of The Write Stuff we have begun to read a new book, ‘All afloat on Noah’s boat’ to support our Expedition learning. The book begins with Noah building his ark, therefore we worked in mini crews to build our own arks just like him. During the activity we also generated lots of vocabulary that Mrs Elmer chotted so that we could use this to empower our writing at the end of the week. Such as, we thought about the actions that we were doing that would have been similar to Noah, ‘tapping’, ‘fixing’, ‘concentrating’ and ‘joining’. We also shared how we felt building the arks to experience how we thought Noah might be feeling, ‘happy and excited because I love building’, ‘happy, I like crafting’, ‘nervous and frightened because my boat might not be big enough’, ‘scared because my boat might not float’, ‘hot and tired because building is hard work’. Watch this space for some fabulous writing to come!

Challenge crew

In challenge crew, we had to use nonverbal ways of communication to give clues to others about the number on the card. Some ways we did this were by clapping or jumping. We then had to group ourselves into whether our number was low, middle or high. After a few goes we got really good at it.

Challenge Crew

This morning for Challenge Crew we worked in small groups to complete ‘The Group Hop’ challenge. This required us to use our coordination and communication skills. We worked in small groups and began by standing in a straight line, we then placed our right hand on the shoulder of the person in front of us and gave them our left leg/ankle to hold. We then had to see how far we could hop along together without toppling over! We then challenged ourselves to see who could hop the farthest! It was great fun but we definitely encountered a few hurdles! During our debrief we realised that communication was vital and that we had to work as a team to be successful.

Debugging!

In our latest computing session we learnt all about what debugging is (which doesn’t actually have anything to do with real life bugs!), how we identify them in an algorithm and how we can fix them! We then had a go at doing some ‘debugging’ ourselves. We worked in pairs and used maps and directions to spot the ‘bug’. We were really good at this! As a crew we then had a go at rewriting the correct algorithm. We then finished the lesson by sharing everything that we had learnt about ‘debugging’!

Drawing Challenge

This morning in Crew we discussed having a positive attitude even when things are tricky. We talked about how we all find different things hard and for some of us this is drawing. We had a go and following a how to draw video and practiced showing perseverance!

Decomposition

In Crew Godley, we continued our computing work and discussed what decomposition was. The children enjoyed explaining what they had already learnt about computers.

We first drew pictures using 2D shapes and discussed how we could break this down for someone to follow. We then created step by step instructions for our partners to follow.

We discussed that we have to break down big tasks into small chunks to make it easier to complete.
