Measuring in maths.

Last half term, we started measuring our growing plants to see how big they would get. We were amazed to discover that in just three weeks they had grown an incredible 60cm tall!

This week’s maths focus is all about measuring and comparing size. Today we explored our classroom, measuring different objects and seeing what we could build. As our structures got taller, we practised measuring them and comparing their heights.

We also developed our counting skills by adding one more resource each time and then remeasuring to see how the height changed. This helped us to understand measurement, counting, and the concept of “one more” in a fun and practical way.

With the field marked out into lanes, we decided to practise how fast we could run while also learning the importance of staying in our own lane. The children showed good listening skills, waiting to start until they heard “GO!”. There was some fantastic running and listening throughout the activity. We’ve enjoyed the nice weather over the past few days, burning off some energy.

Colourful Semantics

Today we used colourful semantics to talk about our activity. Colourful semantics is used for sentence building to help children understand how to make a sentence and the order we put our words and phrases in. The children first start with a “who, doing, what?” structure, which is then built upon depending on their understanding.

Today’s activity involved more planting, and today we planted thyme, basil, and oregano.

Exploring Nature Around Our School

Today we explored the school grounds to see what plants we could identify. We found Daisy, Bluebell, Dandelion and Buttercup.

We blew the dandelions and talked about how the tiny seeds we blow away will eventually settle into the soil and grow into new dandelions. It was fascinating to watch the seeds float through the air!

We also tried the old wives’ tale with the buttercup under our chins to see if we like butter… and guess what? We do! Everyone loved seeing the yellow reflection shine under their chin.

While exploring the forest school area, we spotted some new plants beginning to grow. We carefully observed their leaves and stems and wondered what they might become. We can’t wait to keep watching them grow and see if we can identify them over the next few weeks!

Milkshake, Yummy!

Last week, we planted some strawberry seeds, we learned how the seeds will eventually grow into strawberries. Today, we used some store-bought strawberries to make a delicious strawberry milkshake by chopping them into small pieces and adding them to the blender with milk. We spoke about how we can hopefully use our plants in the future too!

After a week the beans started to sprout! Look how excited we are 🙂

This was them after 2 weeks! Look how tall they are! Notice the difference with 4 days? WOW! We measure each day and write it on our chart. We’re excited to see how much they grow over the weekend.

The seeds we harvested from our tomatoes have even started to grow! Amazing!

We are mathematicians

Crew Farrow have been working hard on the challenge table in maths! We have been using our turn taking skills to play a game of maths snakes a ladders – practicing out abstract addition and subtraction questions. 🎲🐍🪜
