KS1 Family Learning
Thank you to all the parents who joined us this afternoon for our first family learning session of the term. It was lovely to see so many children and parents taking part and producing some amazing Van Gogh inspired artwork.

Blasting into immersion week
This week we have engaged with a range of tasks in order to guess the title and guiding question for the expedition. We have been scientists by exploring our solar system, naming and ordering planets, learning all about forces and to top it off going in the wonder dome, which deepened our understanding. We also painted some beautiful art work of the Sun, Earth and Moon. We researched the artist Andy Warhol, which inspired us to create images with similar techniques and relate to outer space. We used a variety of skills and tools in order to produce these including the use of varying brush strokes, dabbing of a sponge and flicking of a toothbrush to create different elements of our image.
Space Art
Today, Crew Hamill proved what fabulous artists they are by fully engaging themselves in a painting of either the Sun or the Moon. After researching the artist Andy Warhol, we used our inspiration to create images of the Sun or Moon in outer space. We used a variety of skills and tools in order to produce these including the use of varying brush strokes, dabbing of a sponge and flicking of a toothbrush to create different elements of our image.
Mixing secondary colours
In class today we have looked at primary and secondary colours and how we make these using primary colours. We did a fab job at our colour wheels and then we applied this to our rangoli patterns.
Y1 tile artwork
To celebrate the end of our Islam learning we created an Islamic artwork tile using dots and lines. We did this through learning about the artist William Morris who designs lots of patterned artwork for wallpapers.

We are all so proud of our finished art work 🙂 There was some great sketching techniques used.
Sweet Potato and Polenta Bake
We continued with our DT case study by cooking a sweet potato and polenta bake. This dish required us to use a wider range of skills such as slicing, chopping, grating, mixing, reducing liquids and then assembling the dish in a similar way to how you’d make a lasagna.
When the dish was cooked, there were lots of reluctant children who would try it. However, with some encouragement they tried a little. Surprisingly, some of them absolutely loved it to the point they crowded round the dish with a spoon.
During this case study, it’s required children to push themselves outside their comfort zone and for some they have found foods they like that they’d have been unwilling to try before.
Baking
Last week, we baked some buns as part of our DT case study. We had to collect the ingredients we needed before weighing everything out. We worked in small groups ensuring that everyone was able to participate. This allowed us to learn the skills that we’ll need for the final product.
DT – Baking
Crew Hamill are working hard in DT lessons, learning everything they need to be able to cook and bake Mayan dishes ready for their presentation of learning. We started with our dessert – cupcakes! We’ve had a practice run at following the instructions and using the right amount of ingredients to create some vanilla cupcakes topped with buttercream!
