Writing – knowledge building

This week, the children have watched some videos regarding deforestation, importance of trees and the impact on animals and plants. To say I was blown away by the crew work that happened during this session would be an understatement. All the crew gathered facts during the video and then consulted with each other to ensure they weren’t being repetitive with their facts. To see the children work so effortlessly as a crew was a pleasure.

World Book Day in Crew FE

Well what a day in Crew FE! We have had so much fun dressing up and sharing a love of reading. We enjoyed sharing some of our favourite stories whilst tucking into a biscuit and a cup of milkshake.

The Crew FE staff came dressed as the characters from the story we are focusing on over the next few weeks, The Gingerbread Man. We have spent time this week retelling the story in different ways and the children have loved it! Why not see if they can share the story with you this weekend?

Thank you to all of our grown ups for helping us to celebrate World Book Day.

Fractions! (3.3.22) #️⃣🔢

Year 3 had an active discussion as part of their maths lesson today. We discussed what we noticed about different fractions and looked to see if we could order them into unit and non-unit fractions. It was interesting to see what they thought they were, ready to then complete a range of questions successfully during the lesson.

The day of Baba Marta

The 1st of March is Baba Marta day in Bulgaria, a holiday in which traditionally people give each other wishes for health, happiness and luck. Gifts are given between family and friends, which are usually home made and are red and white in colour.

Yesterday we received some beautiful bracelets (known as Martenitsi) from Victor, who’s family was celebrating the day of Baba Marta. We found Bulgaria on the globe, shared information about the day and thought about similar celebrations we share with family such as Christmas and birthdays.

Thank you to Victor and family for our beautiful gifts and well wishes.

Честита Баба Марта! – Chestita Baba Marta!

Did you know that 1st of March is Baba Marta Day in Bulgaria? Here’s a little bit about their celebrations!

Baba Marta Day signifies the beginning of spring for Bulgarians. Baba Marta (or grandmother March) is said to finally get rid of her grumpy brothers January and February; although she can be unhappy if it snows on her day!

Bulgarians will often hand out martenitsas on this day which are usually red and white bands that can be worn around the wrist. The red signifies birth or life and the white signifies purity and cleansing so these amulets are considered to be gifts of Baba Marta to symbolise a rebirth or starting anew; they are also supposed to bring luck!

Typically, you are supposed to wear your martenitsa until you see the first signs of spring; buds opening on trees, storks in the sky or even the first swallows. If you forget these, you can take it off at the beginning of April though. There are two traditions that follow taking off you martenitsa. The first is to hang it from the tree you see budding – especially if it is one your family may rely on producing a bumper crop. The second is to bury it under a rock and leave it until the following morning. How successful and healthy your year will be depends on the size of the insect or bug closest to your martenitsa. Just hope it’s not a spider…

Thank you to Ivan, Gabi and Sofi for sharing this wonderful tradition with us today and for our martenitsas. From all of us at Carcroft, Честита Баба Марта!
