Crew Shields – 21/1/22

It’s been a busy week in Crew Shields as we continue to explore the guiding question, Why should we help our planet survive?

The crew have done lots of collaborative learning this week and it has been such a pleasure to see them learning from each other. They have learned about vertebrates and the features of the 5 categories. Can your child tell you the 5 animal groups?

The children have also been learning about the water cycle and the different stages. Children worked in mini-crews to research an area before sharing with their peers. It was great hearing children share their knowledge to help others learn.

We have started writing out Plot points for the Lorax and the children are becoming more confident with using cohesive devices. There were some great similes added to their description. They really do work hard in writing while developing their stamina for writing.

I would like to praise Crew Shields for setting their personalised pledges based on the feedback they’ve been given in class. This demonstrates great listening but also an eagerness to develop their learning and skills.

NSPCC Number Day 2022 returns on Friday 4th February!

At Carcroft, we are really excited to take part in this year’s NSPCC Rocks Number Day. NSPCC Number day aims to raise money  to help children across the UK, while having fun with Maths

This term we have launched Times Tables Rockstars in KS1 and KS2. 

As part of the NSPCC Number Day,  we would like the children to dress up as their favourite rock star on Friday 4th February. During the day, we will be holding competitions between our crews/year groups. The children will even have the opportunity to challenge their crew and deputy crew leaders.

Donations to support the NSPCC will be greatly received.

Cheerleading Club

Unfortunately Thursdays cheerleading after school club is cancelled. Children who attend after school club are welcome to still attend and go to film club. If your child is not attending your payment will be carried over to next weeks session.

Spring Term: Week 2 in EYFS!

Week 2: Different types of houses including our own home.

The children have really enjoyed their expedition learning this week. They have looked closely at their own houses and then the different types of houses they coulod see in the local community.

They looked at the different materials houses were made of and how each type of house looked different on the outisde. We noticed the bungalows in the community didnt have an upstairs. Presely in FS2 said “this meant they didn’t have stairs inside, which helped old people to move around more easily”.

In the classroom the children used all their new knowledge to build houses in the bricks, print bricks in the paint, build using “cement” in the water tray and create their own dream houses in the workshop.

KS1’s Ocean Adventure

Children had an amazing time learning about the oceans, life in the oceans and sharks during their visit to The Deep today. 

We took a deep dive under the oceans in one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world 🌎 🐠 🦈🦑 🦀 

We enjoyed a fantastic workshop exploring creatures great and small which reside in the oceans. We also modelled some diving equipment – our teacher couldn’t believe how smart we were with the background knowledge we’ve already acquired within a week of launching our expedition. We worked hard which in turn made sure we extended our knowledge of the oceans. Our crews had had a wonderful time. They children were a credit to the school 😊Keep on eye out for TWITP for some more snaps of the day 🦈 

Mr Hull the builder, can he fix it?

During Hook Week, the children in EYFS watched how heavy machinery can make building projects easier. Mr Hull is building new path around the school and the excavator could dig a lot faster and deeper than his spade! 

The children discussed the importance of safety around heavy machinery and they wore their visible vests so that the excavator driver could see them! 

The children felt the rubble in their hands and commented on its texture. They were told how it would sit together to make an even and safe path.

Hook Week – Scrapheap Challenge

As part of Hook Week, the children in EYFS completed a Scrapheap Challenge! They explored a range of resources and materials in the school hall before working collaboratively in small groups to plan and build a simple structure. As part of the Scrapheap Challenge, the children were given a criteria to achieve – their structure needed to remain stable for at least three minutes and it needed to be big enough to house three children inside. 

The children concluded the Scrapheap Challenge by completing a gallery walk and critiquing one another’s structures. 

Henry praised Crew A for making their structure colourful. 

George praised Crew C for building a structure big enough to fit their whole crew in. 

Dominic wondered if Crew B’s structure was strong enough because it was leaning to one side. 

Messiah wondered how all the structures could be made fireproof so that the crews could camp and cook inside them.
